In the region below the surface, snow compaction is thought to occur in three stages. In the first stage near the surface, compaction occurs by grain growth and rearrangement due to grain boundary sliding. In the second stage, compaction occurs through increasing overburden pressure inducing creep deformation and sintering. In the final stage, interconnected pores have closed off, and further compaction is caused by air bubble compression. 3, record 1, English, - snow%20compaction

The simplest form of engineered trench, or shallow land burial, relies mainly on the properties of the excavated overburden and the geohydrologic properties of the site for containment. The intent is to ensure that the travel time of radionuclides from the waste to the human environment via groundwater is long compared to the nuclide half lives. Travel time is long because of low hydraulic gradients, soils of low water permeability and high contaminant adsorption, and lengthy pathways across exclusion zones. 4, record 15, English, - trench

Illustration of a shallow land burial facility (engineered trench). ... Figure 9 outlines the engineered trench option. In this option, the major characteristics are that: . wastes are placed below grade (in suitable hydrogeological conditions) in trenches having a specially prepared bottom that incorporates a drainage system; . there is an earthen cover over the wastes that easily can incorporate additional engineered barriers; . structural stability is not provided by the disposal facility; and . for structural stability, voids between the waste containers are filled with sans or earthen materials - bulk wastes may be compacted. 5, record 15, English, - trench
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Shallow-land burial in trenches was the original low-level waste disposal practice at the beginning of the nuclear era. The method originally consisted in emplacing the wastes in trenches dug into the ground at depths ranging from 3 to 6 m and covering the emplaced wastes with about 1 m of soil. 1, record 15, English, - trench
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 4 CONT
Burial trenches without additional engineered barriers can be used provided that radionuclides will migrate into groundwater beneath the site at an acceptable rate. 1, record 15, English, - trench

As used in this context, the word "engineered" refers to the fact that features and materials have been designed or selected to accomplish certain functions. In shallow land burial the materials are usually natural rather than man-made. 4, record 15, English, - trench

In a type of karst known as cutter-and-pinnacle karst, the contact between bedrock and soil overburden is very irregular... Water preferentially dissolves bedrock along some planar feature, such as bedding, joints, or fractures, whichever is the easier path. Roughly vertical, solutionally widened joints are called cutters, or grikes. Cutters are generally filled with soil. The bedrock that remains between cutters may be reduced to relatively narrow "ridges" of rock, called pinnacles, particularly where cutters are closely spaced. Cutter-and-pinnacle karst(or simply "pinnacle karst" for short) is common in many of the carbonate valleys in Maryland...... in pinnacle karst, part of the foundation may be supported by a bedrock pinnacle and part may be supported by a cutter(soil-filled). The result can be differential settling of the building, which may produce cracks in the walls, foundation, and floor... compromise the structural soundness of the bearing walls and, therefore, place the safety of the whole structure in doubt. 2, record 21, English, - pinnacle%20karst

1, record 33, French, - sondage%20%C3%A0%20ciel%20ouvert

The simplest form of engineered trench, or shallow land burial, relies mainly on the properties of the excavated overburden and the geohydrologic properties of the site for containment. The intent is to ensure that the travel time of radionuclides from the waste to the human environment via groundwater is long compared to the nuclide half lives. Travel time is long because of low hydraulic gradients, soils of low water permeability and high contaminant adsorption, and lengthy pathways across exclusion zones. 1, record 47, English, - contaminant%20adsorption

Engineered Trench, Belowground Vault, Modular Concrete Canister and Boreholes.... These disposal concepts require relatively uniform overburden media of clay, till or sand.... the overburden geology of southern Ontario is more consistent and laterally homogeneous than that of northern Ontario and, thus, offers considerably more potential for finding a technically suitable site for a LLW [low-level radioactive waste] disposal facility. The overburden of the Canadian Shield is patchy, with a considerable amount of exposed bedrock, surface water, peat bogs, etc. that are unsuitable for siting a LLW facility.... One exception is the Cochrane clay belt... which is a relatively thick and continuous belt of silty clay till. 2, record 48, English, - clay%20belt

(The) fields are filled with pressurized hot water of "connate" origin at pressures ranging from about 40% to about 90% in excess of the hydrostatic pressure corresponding to the depth. The explanation of these very high pressures is believed to be that gradual subsidence via growth faults has led to the ultimate isolation of trapped pockets of water contained in alternating layers of sandstone and shale. The trapped fluid supports a substantial share of the weight of the overburden and has prevented the full compaction of the formation. 1, record 54, English, - trapped%20fluid
