Instrumental neutron activation analysis(INAA) is used to determine the concentration of trace and major elements in a variety of matrices. A sample is subjected to a neutron flux and radioactive nuclides are produced. As these radioactive nuclides decay, they emit gamma rays whose energies are characteristic for each nuclide. Comparison of the intensity of these gamma rays with those emitted by a standard permit a quantitative measure of the concentrations of the various nuclides. 2, record 1, English, - instrumental%20neutron%20activation%20analysis

5, record 6, French, - concentration

Planned permanent placement of radioactive material with no intention of recovery. 7, record 7, English, - disposal
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Disposal is a permanent method of management in which there is no intention of retrieval and which, ideally, does not rely for its success on the continued need for institutional controls beyond a reasonable period of time. Disposal would be achieved when the wastes are sufficiently isolated by natural or engineered passive containment, or sufficiently reduced in concentration by radioactive decay or dispersal, that the residual risks to human beings and the environment are acceptable. 3, record 7, English, - disposal
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Permanent disposal means sequestering the wastes, until they have decayed to a safe level, away from the environment in a permanent facility requiring no monitoring, maintenance, or ongoing institutional controls. ... One unfortunate aspect of the Board’s adherence to this idea is the inhibiting effect it has on the search for simpler solutions, such as long-term storage, that concentrate on improved management of the wastes. 3, record 7, English, - disposal
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The debate essentially concerns the distinction between storage and disposal. "Storage" involves the retrievability, monitoring, and ongoing institutional control of wastes. It also includes active elements of waste management in such a waste facility (e.g., leachate collection and treatment). By contrast, the concept of disposal assumes that a waste management facility can be designed in such a way that there will be no need for such measures. 3, record 7, English, - disposal

Low-level radioactive waste (LLW) is composed of a variety of substances that are generated by a large number of processes. Due to this heterogenous mixture, there is no universally accepted classification scheme. The Task Force's assessment of this problem led it to develop its own definition and classification system, based primarily on the specific activity and half-life of the materials involved. First, it defined low-level radioactive waste as being : all those radioactive wastes, other than spent fuel, arising from the mining, milling, refining or use of materials containing radionuclides. Second, it divided low-level wastes into four categories or classes... based on the concentration of radioactivity... of the waste material... 5, record 9, English, - low%2Dlevel%20waste

The permissible limit for inhalation of a radionuclide is the appropriate ALI [annual limit of intake]. This is given in units of activity, Bq. Because it is often easier to measure and control the concentration of radioactvity in the air than to measure or control the intake, the ALIs are used to calculate the Derived Air Concentrations (DACs). The Derived Air Concentration, or DAC for any radionuclide, is that concentration in air, expressed in Bq/m³ which, if worked in for a year (50 weeks of 40 hours each for a total of 2000 hours per year), would result in the ALI for inhalation. The normal breathing rate, based on Reference Man, is 2,400 m³ per year at work. Isotope Dilution Techniques. This technique uses a solution of BaSO4/EDTA/NH3 in which the sulphate ion has been labelled with radioactive sulphur-35. When an aliquot of sulphate sample is added to the above solution and acidified, the radioactive sulphur partitions itself between the sulphate sample and the sulphate which is tied to the barium which is then precipitated out of solution. The diluted radioactive sample is then analysed on a scintillation counter and from the measured and original concentration of sulphur-35, the concentration of the sulphate sample can be determined. 1, record 29, English, - isotope%20dilution%20technique
