CONCENTRATION SALINE [6 records]

Record 1 2011-08-31

Subject field(s)

DEF

Ice cover resulting from the packing and freezing together of floes, brash ice and other forms of floating ice.

OBS

Over time, a consolidated ice covered is referred to as first year ice. It has a high brine content and generally a smooth surface. In the subsequent summer melt period, brine drainage reduces the brine concentration, and a low saline ice with air voids is produced. This is known as multi year ice.

CONT

In parenteral solutions, the dextrose concentration is indicated by a "D" followed by its concentration in water(W) or normal saline(NS). For example, D5 or D5W indicates that a solution contains 5 percent dextrose in water. Similarly, D5/N5 means that a solution contains 5 percent dextrose in normal saline.

CONT

  • solution aqueuse de dextrose à 5 pourcent

CONT

Nasal provocative challenge. Specific nasal reactivity can be determined by exposing the nasal mucosa to allergens. A simple technique is to deliver one drop of antigen on the nasal mucosa and to compare this response with normal saline applied on the other side. The dosage starts at the concentration that induces a positive skin test. Response can be assessed by direct rhinoscopy.

CONT

Bradykinin and lysobradykinine have been demonstrated in nasal lavage fluids after nasal antigen challenge of atopic patients.

CONT

(Paelten-Sharon, Les allergies, 1987, page 290).

CONT

If two liquids with different saline concentrations are separated by a semi-permeable membrane a difference exists between the pressures on the two sides of the membrane related to the difference in concentration. The water passes through the membrane from the less concentrated compartment to the more concentrated compartment, where the pressure tends to rise.

OBS

OBS

[In a restricted marine environment] If the climate is arid, evaporation exceeds inflow, and the water becomes hypersaline.... Under conditions of aridity, the restricted sea has adjacent lands with little or no stream action other than torrential episodes which may occasionally wash in detrital material. The sea may attain high temperatures, with excessive evaporation, and development of salinity greater than that of the open sea. Excessive evaporation produces a lowering of water level, and induces a permanent inflowing current of normal sea water across, or through, the restricting barriers.... If it were not for the continued inflow current, the history of restricted seas in arid climates would be short. The water would completely evaporate, leaving behind a relatively thin coating of saline residue. Maintenance of inflow from the open sea provides a continuous supply of dissolved salts, and a balance is reached between evaporation and inflow for given conditions. Inevitably, the concentration of salts within the restricted area is increased and may reach the saturation point for some.

OBS
