Record 2 2009-06-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
  • Geology
DEF

Reconstruction plane of the present state of the intersection of the geological beds with a reference surface corresponding most often to an unconfomity or being the contact surface of the allochthon on the autochthon in the case of a nappe.

CONT

A subcrop map shows what an area would look like if the topmost deposits would be removed. It is therefore very useful for people such as well drillers, who are curious to know which rocks are present at a certain depth, instead of at the surface.

OBS

subcrop map: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cartographie
  • Géologie
DEF

CONT

The transition from kyanite to andalusite is known as the andalusite isograd, while the transition from andalusite to sillimanite is called the sillimanite isograd.

CONT

Note that if were making a geologic map, we could draw a line on the map that separates the pelitic rocks containing only Pyrophyllite from those containing Kyanite + Quartz. Such a line(a surface in 3 dimensions) is called an isograd(iso-same, grad-grade). In this case, since it represents the first appearance of Kyanite, we call it the Kyanite Isograd... If we continue walking along the direction that T & P increased in these rocks during metamorphism, we would eventually come to another place where in the pelitic rocks the mineral assemblage changes. This time the change is from Kyanite + Quartz to Sillimanite + Quartz. Again, we can draw a line on the map that indicates this change in mineral assemblage, this time calling it the Sillimanite Isograd. Just like before, this represents the point on the phase diagram, above, where the geothermal gradient intersected the boundary for the reaction... Because the sandstone and the limestone do not contain Kyanite, the isograd does not appear in these rocks, but we can still extrapolate its position across the map or outcrop.

OBS

isograd: A line or surface (either imaginary or in a diagram) joining points where the rock originated under the same conditions of pressure and temperature, as indicated by similarity of facies or metamorphic grade.

OBS

sillimanite isograd: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
  • Cartographie
OBS

In addition to determining the source(s) of H, C, O, and S in ores and altered rocks..., stable isotope and fluid inclusion data may be utilized to map paleogeothermal systems and, in part, deduce their time-space hydrological evolution.

CONT

Electron backscattered diffraction in a scanning electron microscope allows the crystallographic orientation of small grains to be measured precisely. EBSD can be used to study crystallographic preferred orientations, grain boundary and twin characteristics, to quantitatively map grain microstructures and for characterisation of fine-grained phases. We are using the EBSD to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic signatures of deformation recrystallisation and reaction processes in rocks.
