Malgré l'apparente synonymie des termes «communauté» et «collectivité», le terme «communauté» fait référence au groupe de personnes qui partagent les mêmes intérêts, objectifs, la même culture ou la même religion. Tandis que, «collectivité» fait référence au lieu où vivent un ensemble de personnes qui peuvent être soit des communautés ou bien un ensemble de personnes qui vivent sur un territoire donné : collectivité locale, nationale ou territoriale.
