1, record 30, French, - graphique%20en%20banderole

… the critical importance of accounting correctly for the relationship between wind availability and demand … shows clearly that over the winters 2006-9, the mean wind load factor across the hours of very highest demand was considerably lower than the mean load factor across more typical(lower) winter demands. This confirms that any group of hours spread across the whole winter, without consideration of demand level, will not be representative of absolute peak demand; plotting the mean load factor across all hours above a certain demand combines the degree of aggregation which is needed to reveal any trend, with the necessary focus on the hours of highest demand. 1, record 48, English, - mean%20load%20factor

1, record 54, French, - courbe%20de%20survie%20cellulaire

Usually, one rock is a standard type, e. g. a mid-oceanic-ridge basalt or a carbonaceous chondrite meteorite. Data for the test rock are "normalized" to the standard by dividing the abundance for each element by the abundance in the standard and plotting the quotient, usually in order of atomic number. Elements which have the same abundance in the test rock as in the standard yield a quotient of 1; if the two compositions were identical the plot would be a straight line through 1 on the y axis. Elements more abundant in the test rock yield numbers greater than 1; those less abundant yield numbers less than 1. By connecting the points plotted by a single line, a spidery diagram of peaks and troughs is obtained which illustrates immediately systematic differences in composition, e. g. relative enrichment in incompatible elements. 2, record 55, English, - spider%20diagram

Free balloon whose path while moving upwards is visually observed in order to measure upper winds. 3, record 73, English, - pilot%20balloon

One expedient method for determining the winds aloft entails the launching and tracking of a pilot balloon, also known as a pibal. The name for these balloons that do not carry instruments apparently came from their use during the 19th century when they were launched prior to manned balloon ascents to help guide or "pilot" the manned balloons. The brightly colored helium filled balloon rises at a known ascent rate. However, the balloon is carried horizontally with the wind. Since the assumption is made that the balloon serves as a tracer of the wind, the horizontal motion of the balloon over measured time intervals can be used to determine the wind speed. An observer visually tracks the motion of the balloon with an instrument called a theodolite and records the elevation and azimuth angles at timed intervals. The sequence of observed elevation and azimuth information are plotted on a plotting board to obtain the balloon motion. The wind speed and direction at each selected level are determined. Wind observations may be limited by low cloud ceilings that obscure the balloon. 2, record 73, English, - pilot%20balloon

The speed of virus spread is much slower than most people expect. This means that the logging of occurrences is important, even with a significant margin of error in reporting the time of discovery. Place of discovery is more difficult to get wrong and can also be used in plotting the progress of the spread of a virus. Electronic communications are making the plotting of the virus spread more difficult, since a user can contract a virus from a program downloaded from bulletin boards one mile away or 10, 000 miles away equally easily. 1, record 97, English, - virus%20spread

1, record 97, French, - propagation%20du%20virus
