Le phénomène de base de ce remodelage, identifié par Frost [...], est la succession dans le temps et dans l'espace d'une résorption ostéoclastique et d'une apposition ostéoblastique, phénomène auquel Frost a donné le nom d'«unité multicellulaire de base», («basic multicellular unit»; BMU), qui est parfois appelée également unité de remodelage osseux («bone remodeling unit»).
