Constant False-alarm Rate(CFAR). A constant false-alarm rate in the presence of variable levels of noise is usually a requirement placed on any modern radar. It is easily achieved in CW radars by use of filter banks. The energy reaching the filter bank is restricted either by automatic gain control or, when feasible, by limiting, and the thresholds in the circuitry following the filter bank are properly set with respect to the level in the total band. In a typical setting technique, random noise is injected into the amplifier that drives the filter bank, and each threshold is set to achieve the desired false-alarm rate. The level of noise is then varied and the threshold rechecked. If the limiting is proper, the false-alarm rate should not change. However, target signals in the absence of noise are unaffected, as they do not change the total energy present in the broad doppler spectrum sufficiently to reach the limiting level. 1, record 1, English, - constant%20false%2Dalarm%20rate

We have to consider what type of gain device is suitable for this application. Actually the choice is simple : Bipolar devices have too low an input impedance to be useable, and tubes have too little gain to be used in a single stage power amplifier. The term applied to the phenomenon which occurs when an output signal is limited in some way by the full range of an amplifier, analog-to-digital converter(ADC) or other device. When this occurs, the signal is flattened a the peak values, the signal approaches the shape of a square wave, and high frequency components are introduced. Clipping may be hard, as is the case when the signal is strictly limited at some level; or it may be soft, in which case the clipping signal continues to follow the input at some reduced gain. 1, record 17, English, - clipping

Varian has just released a new extended interaction amplifier(EIA)-the VKB-2400T-that delivers a 1KW minimum peak power output(with a 30 dB minimum gain) at 95 CHz, well into the millimetre waveband. Small and light, the new amplifier provides excellent phase stability, and has already demonstrated up to 2. 3 KW of peak power at 95 CHz. Operating life of the EIA is expected to exceed 5000 hours and it is warranted for 1000 hours of operation. 1, record 29, English, - extended%20interaction%20amplifier
