How can one recognize the difference between a stable surface and one that is actively corroding?... If a strong, even film of corrosion is formed on a metal, this will often protect the underlying metal against further corrosion by providing a barrier against new chemical reactions. Thus, a stable passivating layer is produced. Stable surfaces on metal objects are generally adherent and the thickness does not increase(or increases only minimally) with time. 2, record 2, English, - stable%20surface

1, record 2, French, - surface%20stable

Whereas the seasonal pycnocline disappears every winter, the permanent pycnocline is always present in [the subpolar regions]. The stability of the main pycnocline acts as a barrier against turbulent mixing processes, and beneath this depth the water has not had contact with the surface for a very long time. 2, record 3, English, - permanent%20pycnocline

A particle which had its surface fully covered by collector would find it difficult... to cling to an air-water interface completely packed with frother molecules. The incompleteness of adsorption of the contacting phases is an important factor in attachment. Mineralizing contact may result from collision between bubble and particle, from precipitation of gas from water or through a mixed process in which precipitation initiates contact. Tests... showed that attachment on collision with a coursing bubble increases with the density of the particle concerned, which by its greater mass is better able to break through the slipstream or energy barrier surrounding the bubble. Other research supports this by showing how a minute bubble, such as might result from precipitation, initiates bubble attachment or the build-up of a buoyant system.... The available gas also influences the kinetics of attachment. 6, record 6, English, - adhesion

Geomembrane : The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because :(i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive;(ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners;(iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and(iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction]. 2, record 12, English, - geomembrane

By virtue of its own physical chemistry, the polymer may attract(or repel) substrate, product, inhibitor, or other molecules to its surface thus concentrating(or depleting) them in the immediate vicinity of the enzyme. E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. has developed a novel approach to gain some of the advantages of a coextruded blow-molded bottle without the cost and complexity of multiple extruders and expensive scrap reclaim systems. Only minor modification of the basic equipment is required. A barrier resin is tailored for physical blending with a base resin in much the same way that colorant is blended with a resin. However, instead of producing a homogenized mix, the barrier resin is permitted to laminate in the base resin. Several random multiple layers of barrier resin of various lengths and sizes are created. Although no single layer completely covers the entire shape and surface of the bottle, barrier is created by the "tortuous path" the permeating gas must follow. A modified nylon material is the first to be used for this approach. Applications include fuel tanks and bottles for agricultural chemicals, thinners, and solvents. 1, record 15, English, - blended%20resin

There are several different types of photoelectric cells. In some [i. e., phototubes] there is a light-sensitive surface [a photocathode] which emits electrons and a second electrode, usually maintained at a fairly high positive potential, which collects the electrons... A second type is the photovoltaic or barrier layer photocell in which incident light produces an emf between two terminals... Solar cells, widely used to provide energy for satellites and space vehicles, are photovoltaic cells converting radiant energy into electrical energy. A familiar form uses a very perfect silicon crystal which is treated with trace impurities to introduce extra positive charges on one side of a thin wafer and extra negative charges on the other side... Radiant energy disturbs the electrical balance of the charges and thereby induces an emf which continues as long as light strikes the crystal... A third type of photoelectric cell [photoconductive, or photoresistive cell] utilizes the photoconductivity effect. 6, record 18, English, - photoelectric%20receptor

Such supersaturation does develop because frequently there is no "plane surface of pure water(or ice) "available. On a barrier island, the subsurface hydrology is controlled by the interaction between the static groundwater table and the dynamic seawater table, and the geomorphology of the landscape controls where these two water tables meet. Thus, the interaction between these three surfaces(the groundwater table, the seawater table, and the land surface) controls the vegetation. In an area where the landscape is such that the excursions of the groundwater table dominate the subsurface physico-chemistry, the salinities will be lower, and the vegetation will reflect the salinity; alternatively, if the variations of the seawater table dominate, the salinity will be higher, and halophytic plants will dominate. 2, record 23, English, - subsurface%20hydrology

Radio Fence acts as a hidden barrier that gives your dog access to the whole yard but inhibits his movements into unwanted areas.... A crystal-tuned transmitter plugs into a standard outlet and emits a radio signal that travels along an underground wire [which is] buried an inch or two [below the surface. ] The four-ounce receiver, worn on your pet's existing collar, picks up the radio signal and alerts him as he nears the hidden boundary that you have customized for your yard. If he crosses the boundary, he will receive a small electrical correction. 1, record 32, English, - radio%20fence

1, record 32, French, - cl%C3%B4ture%20radio

Other blow molding operations.... Fluorination surface treatment is a process to improve the gas barrier of polyethylene to nonpolar solvents. A barrier is created by the chemical reaction of the fluorine and the polyethylene, which form a thin(20-40 nm) fluorocarbon layer on the bottle surface. Two systems are available for creating the layer. The "in-process" system uses fluorine as a part of the parison expand gas in the blowing operation. The "post-treatment" system requires bottles to be placed in an enclosed chamber filled with fluorine gas. The method forms a barrier layer on both the inside and outside surfaces. This surface treatment allows low-cost, blow-molded polyethylene bottles to be used for paint, paint thinner, lighter fluid, polishes, cleaning solvents, cosmetics, and toiletries. The approach can replace other higher cost resins or coextrusion processes. 1, record 35, English, - fluorination%20surface%20treatment

Unplasticized PVC presents some processing difficulties due to its high melt viscosity; in addition, the finished product is too brittle for some applications. To overcome these problems and to produce toughening, certain polymeric additives are usually added to the PVC. These materials, known as impact modifiers, are generally semicompatible and often somewhat rubbery in nature. Among the most important impact modifiers in use today are butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers (nitrile rubber), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) graft terpolymers, methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) terpolymers, chlorinated polyethylene, and some polyacrylates. 4, record 36, English, - impact%20modifier

Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. 1, record 44, English, - barrier

As a groundwater pollution control mechanism, the use of a liner on the bottom and sides of a landfill has been considered necessary for many years. This necessity is created by the moisture in the landfill materials (augmented by rainfall and snowmelt) interacting with the contained waste, forming a liquid called "leachate". ... The types of liners that have been used are ... numerous ... but the predominant liner material until recently has been clay .... There are two drawbacks to clay liners, however, both of which have given impetus to the use of geomembranes for landfill liners. 1, record 45, English, - landfill%20liner

the film balance, devised by Langmuir in 1917, is still the principal instrument used to study(monolaye) films. Essentially, it is a shallow trough filled with water on which the substance is spread. A bar or barrier can be pushed across the trough to compress the film. The surface pressure exerted by the film is measured by a sensitive floating, suspended balance. 1, record 47, English, - film%20balance

1, record 47, French, - balance%20%C3%A0%20films
