By agreeing to lie to a friend's employer by saying that the friend is sick with a cold and not sick because of alcoholism the "enabler" becomes an accomplice to his or her friend's acts and in so doing does not help the friend to quit the habit of drinking. 2, record 1, English, - enabling

It is to be noted that in the definition of "enabler", the connotation of "permission" can either be tacit or explicit; the French term "agent provocateur" can only render explicit permission, whereas "complice" would render implicit permission. The French term "facilitateur", which implies a positive form of help or support, would be inappropriate for cases of alcoholism, unless used facetiously or ironically. 1, record 2, French, - agent%20provocateur
