"ret." is short for the past participle "retired", an abbreviation often used by the media to denote a player who was forced to concede a match already in progress due to sickness or injury. Compare with the abbreviation also seen in the sports summaries section of English-Canadian newspapers - "def." - a disqualification or a default, situation in which a player does not show up (see "walkover") or in which he is forced to lose because of a rule violation. 5, record 1, English, - retire

Selon cette définition du Petit Robert, «déclarer forfait » semble plus spécifique que les autres termes, donc il pourrait s'agir d'un pseudo-synonyme, plutôt qu'un réel synonyme, quoiqu'il soit attesté par plusieurs sources.
