Ni protogène, ni protophile (dans une situation donnée). En présence d'acides ou de bases de Brönsted extrêmement forts, des solvants normalement aprotiques peuvent accepter ou perdre un proton. Par exemple, l'acétonitrile est le plus souvent un solvant aprotique mais, il est protophile en présence d'acide sulfurique concentré et protogène en présence de tert-butylate de potassium. Des considérations semblables s'appliquent au benzène, au trichlorométhane, etc.

... with liquid ammonia as the solvent, one can define NH4+ as the acid ion and NH2-, as the base ion, and the former can be thought of as hydrogen ion combined with a molecule of the solvent. However, for a hydrogenless (aprotic) solvent, such as liquid sulfur dioxide, the extensions are less obvious.
