The basic purpose of a fiber-optic illuminator is to provide the light source for fiber-optic cables. Light from inside the illuminator travels down each optic fiber, which may be configured to produce any number of desired effects.

Un système d’éclairage par fibre optique contient plusieurs composantes. Le bloc d’éclairage est la composante active; il contient une source de lumière soit [à incandescence] à halogène, soit aux halogénures, une alimentation électrique, et un dispositif de convergence de la lumière en un faisceau focalisé. Le bloc d’éclairage peut également contenir un ventilateur destiné à prolonger la vie utile de la lampe et un disque de couleurs ou tout autre système de modification du faisceau, de sorte qu’il est possible de changer l’intensité, la configuration et la couleur de la lumière.
