L'emploi de ces termes diffère [selon] les régions du Canada. Au Québec, par exemple, on parle de «règlements municipaux», le mot «arrêté» étant réservé à l'expression «arrêté ministériel». Par contre, au Nouveau-Brunswick, «arrêté» a été consacré comme traduction de l'anglais «by-law» uniquement en ce qui concerne les municipalités («arrêté municipal»). Le terme «règlement administratif» est employé au Nouveau-Brunswick [comme équivalent de] «by-law» [lorsqu'il s'agit] d'une corporation ou d'une association[,] et les seuls «règlements» sont ceux qui font partie des lois provinciales (souvent précisant les modalités d'application des lois). En France, un conseil municipal prend des délibérations, et un «arrêté municipal» est un des pouvoirs réglementaires comportant la police municipale qui est dévolu au maire sans que le conseil municipal y délibère.
