[This figure] shows the design chosen for a CANDU fuel bundle. This bundle, used in all routine fuelling of CANDU reactors, is called CANLUB fuel. ... The bundle ... is mostly uranium dioxide (UO2), sheathed and held together by zircaloy. Zircaloy 4, the specific alloy used for this purpose, is 98% zirconium and 1.7% tin. The UO2 is in the form of high-density pellets. Each fuel element is a thin zircaloy tube, the fuel sheath, filled with fuel pellets. A thin lubricating layer of graphite between the pellet and the sheath is what gives the fuel the proprietary name CANLUB.
