Normalmente se clasifican en tres grupos : alimentos (trigo, café y azúcar), agrícolas no alimenticios (fibras, algodón, yute, etc.) y minerales.

producto básico; La Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu BBVA), con el asesoramiento de la Real Academia Española, indica que el Diccionario panhispánico de dudas considera que "commodity" y su plural "commodities" son anglicismos innecesarios, que deben sustituirse por los equivalentes en español "productos básicos" o "materias primas", según los casos. También pueden ser válidas las alternativas "bienes (o servicios) homogéneos".
