Drawing is forming a flat piece of metal into a seamless hollow shape, using a punch that causes the metal to flow into a die cavity or opening. It is most extensively applied of all the forming methods for aluminum and involves the widest variety of techniques. The starting form for virtually all drawing operations is a blank.

Drawing is the operation of pulling material of uniform section through a female die with an opening of slightly smaller section than the material so that the cross-sectional area of the latter is reduced and the length increased.

Drawing and ironing constitute the modern methods of beverage can manufacturing. The initial draw transforms the blank into a small cup.

On entend par emboutissage la mise en forme d'une feuille de métal généralement plane, appelée flan, en une pièce creuse de surface non développable, la déformation ayant lieu, tout au moins théoriquement, à surface, donc à épaisseur constante. Ce travail est exécuté à l'aide d'un outillage spécialement créé pour la pièce, et monté sur une presse. [...] Les pièces embouties en alliage d'aluminium sont nombreuses et de formes très variées. Les plus faciles à fabriquer sont les pièces à parois latérales perpendiculaires au flan, le fond étant ou non mis en forme, dans lesquels la tôle est maintenue pendant toute la durée de l'opération entre le poinçon, qui est à la forme intérieure de la pièce, et la matrice, qui est à la forme extérieure.
