Hypocognition, a term introduced to modern behavioral science by anthropologist Robert Levy, means the lack of a linguistic or cognitive representation for an object, category, or idea.

Pour reprendre la terminologie très utile de Robert Levy[, anthropologue] (1984), les symptômes qui cadrent avec la société font l'objet d'une «hypercognition», tandis que les autres font l'objet d'une «hypocognition». Les anthropologues-psychiatres signalent sur ce point que non seulement la différence d'attention cognitive se répercute sur la façon dont les personnes rapportent l'événement, mais elle reflète aussi une différence d'expérience.
