L'état de latence virale consiste en un arrêt de synthèse des protéines virales. Le virus est présent uniquement sous la forme de matériel génétique. Cette tactique, qui implique le ralentissement ou l'arrêt de la multiplication virale, n'est utilisée que de façon partielle ou transitoire; un arrêt complet et définitif de multiplication signifierait la mort du virus. Il s'agit ici d'une latence définie au niveau cellulaire (restriction d'expression des gène viraux) et non pas clinique. En effet, l'état de latence cellulaire n'est pas nécessairement établi de façon synchrone dans toutes les cellules cibles et peut s'accompagner de symptômes.
