Permeability of cells, its nature and measurement from the point of view of mathematical biophysics. ... In spite of the tremendous importance of cell permeability for several branches of cell biology, and in spite of the circumstance that numerous experiments have in the past decades contributed a very large array of facts to our knowledge in this field, a mathematical biophysicist still feels rather uncomfortable when confronted with the different contributions to the problem. Perhaps the most shocking thing in the whole situation is the following. In spite of a large amount of observation and of more or less quantitative measurements, we hardly can find anywhere in the literature an accepted standard unit for the quantity which is referred to as permeability.
