Le codage de base pour le son numérique est PCM («Pulse Code Modulation»), que l'on traduit assez rarement par MIC (Modulation par Impulsions Codées). Ce codage est une simple transformation des signaux analogiques en signaux numériques. Le codage ADPCM («Adaptative Differential PCM») diminue encore la taille des signaux sonores en utilisant les techniques d'extrapolation pour prévoir les variations d'amplitude. Ce type de codage est celui utilisé par le CD-I avec trois niveaux de qualité (A,B,C).
