La désignation BKN (broken clouds) correspond à «fragmenté» en français, mais elle n'est utilisée que pour les observations et pour l'aviation, et non pas dans le langage courant, ni même dans les prévisions publiques. Pour ces dernières, on utilisera alors «cloudy with sunny periods» ou «nuageux avec percées de soleil», mais il n'y a pas de correspondance stricte avec la portion du ciel couverte de nuages, puisqu'il ne s'agit pas d'une observation ponctuelle, mais d'une prévision qui couvre une période de quelques heures, durant lesquelles la couverture nuageuse peut varier grandement.
