Il existe plusieurs procédés de raffinage-conversion que l’on peut scinder en deux grandes familles : — purification chimique en tête du procédé, consistant en une extraction sélective de l’uranium à l’aide d’un solvant organique; ce raffinage conduit à la fabrication d’uranium métal, d’UO2 ou d’UF6 de qualité nucléaire; — purification physique en fin du procédé mais applicable uniquement dans le procédé conduisant à l’hexafluorure UF6; ce procédé consiste en une distillation de l’hexafluorure contenant les impuretés sous forme de fluorures volatils et non volatils. Dans ce procédé, le raffinage est donc l’ultime étape.
