Un gyroscope est essentiellement constitué d'un solide de révolution animé d'un mouvement de rotation rapide autour de son axe de symétrie. Le solide de révolution est appelé rotor ou toupie gyroscopique. Dans un grand nombre de cas d'utilisation concrète, le rotor doit pouvoir prendre n'importe quelle position dans l'espace. À cet effet on rend le rotor solidaire du boîtier qui le contient au moyen d'un système de deux cadres mobiles l'un par rapport à l'autre. Ce montage à deux degrés de liberté ne tient pas compte du degré de liberté relatif à la rotation du rotor autour de son axe.
