... scour monitoring at... offshore structures can identify and prevent disasters before they strike. While scour can occur slowly over time, flood events can cause rapid scouring, to the point of structure failure. As scour alters the elevation of the riverbed at a pier, a monitoring system can indicate when a bridge becomes structurally deficient and dangerous due to sediment erosion. While monitoring does not make a structure less susceptible to scour, a real-time alert can be sent out if a bridge becomes scour critical and must be closed. 1, record 1, English, - scour%20monitoring

Cardiac concussion... is a relatively uncommon and frequently mortal condition... It has well-defined characteristics that clearly distinguish it from cardiac contusion. This last condition occurs far more frequently following blunt thoracic traumas. "Commotio cordis" results from a sudden and blunt impact to the precordial area that alters the normal cardiac electrical activity and causes cardiac arrest or sudden death, without evidence of anatomical and structural cardiac injuries. The impact causing "commotio cordis" is generally of low energy and low speed. Death is caused by a cardiac arrhythmia, and there is evidence that ventricular fibrillation is the most common in fatal cases. 4, record 6, English, - cardiac%20concussion

deconvolution microscope : using the deconvolution microscope, researchers can see the locations of target molecules inside the cell. Seeing where glowing molecules reside within a cell is helpful for a range of research projects--from studies of how the distribution of various proteins changes during an organism's development to investigations of how administration of a drug alters the locations of certain proteins. The microscope, called DeltaVision, is manufactured by Applied Precision, based in Issaquah, Wash. It works by magnifying images and quantifying the intensity of light shed by the sample. The user specifies which colors of light are of interest. For instance, a user can program the microscope to report the intensity of a particular shade of green shining from the cytoplasm of a cell. After a researcher uses the microscope to make a series of optical slices through a specimen, the scope's computer "deconvolves" the images--in other words, it subtracts the out-of-focus light. Then the computer stacks together the images of the slices to reconstruct the original microscope sample. This gives researchers gh-resolution images of the sample's three-dimensional structure. 2, record 13, English, - wide%20field%20deconvolution%20microscopy

Chemists typically activate chemical reactions through the application of heat(thermochemistry), light(photochemistry), or electric potential(electrochemistry). An alternative approach, called mechanochemistry, involves activating reactions through the application of mechanical stresses. In this approach specific atoms in a molecule are subjected to external stresses. These stresses deform the molecular geometry in a manner that alters the relative energies of reactants and transition states, thus altering reaction barriers. 3, record 16, English, - mechanochemistry

1, record 16, Spanish, - mecanoqu%C3%ADmica

The first antibodies produced in a humoral immune response are IgM, but activated B cells subsequently undergo isotype switching or class switching to secrete antibodies of different isotypes : IgG [inmunoglobulin G], IgA, and IgE. Isotype switching does not affect antibody specificity significantly, but alters the effector functions that an antibody can engage. Modification of enzymes, which is often, but not always, accomplished by the addition of a phosphate group to a specific serine, threonine, or tyrosine residue in the enzyme. The phosphate comes from ATP and its transfer is catalyzed by enzymes known as protein kinases... Phosphorylation alters the shape of an enzyme in such a way as to increase or inhibit its activity. The subsequent removal of the phosphate group, which reverses the effect of the phosphorylation, is achieved by a second enzyme, called a phosphoprotein phosphatase. 1, record 37, English, - covalent%20modification

Method based on the covalent attachment of enzymes to water insoluble matrices. It is the most widespread and one of the most investigated approaches to enzyme immobilisation. The selection of conditions for immobilization is more difficult than in the cases of the other carrier binding methods described, and frequently involves more complicated and less mild conditions than the other methods, but, since covalent bonds are being formed, stable immobilized enzyme preparations which do not leach enzyme into solution in the presence of substrate or high ionic concentration solutions are formed in almost all cases. The immobilization of an enzyme by covalent attachment to a support matrix must involve only functional groups of the enzyme that are not essential for catalytic action, and therefore no reagents must be used which could affect the binding and active sites of the enzyme. 2, record 38, English, - covalent%20binding

Irradiation-Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Austenitic Stainless Steels. In recent years, failures of reactor internal components have been observed after the components have reached neutron fluence levels... The general pattern of the observed failures indicates that as nuclear plants age and fluence increases, various apparently nonsensitized austenitic stainless steels become susceptible to intergranular failure... Irradiation produces defects and defect clusters in grain matrices and alters the dislocation network, dislocation loop, and dislocation channel structures, leading to radiation-induced hardening. Irradiation also leads to changes in the stability of second-phase precipitates and the local chemistry near grain boundaries, precipitates, and defect clusters. 2, record 41, English, - irradiation%2Dassisted%20stress%20corrosion

Orbit control [consists in] controlling satellites to keep [them] flying on the designated orbit. When a satellite flies in low earth orbit(LEO), it gradually descends due to air drag. It is necessary to push the satellite back to the original orbit by activating station-keeping thrusters. Geostationary satellites do not descend due to air drag, however, they do de-orbit from their designated stationary position because the gravitational field of the Earth is not uniform and because the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon alters their orbit. In a similar way, geostationary satellites are pushed back to their original position by activating station-keeping thrusters. 2, record 44, English, - orbit%20control

Hot-wire anemometer... is an important device used principally in research on air turbulence and boundary layers. There are two types, known as constant-voltage and constant-temperature. The cooling of an electrically heated fine wire placed in a gas stream which alters wire resistance depends on the fluid velocity. With the constant-voltage type, as soon as the gas starts flowing, the hot wire cools off, the voltage across a Wheatstone bridge connected to the wire is kept constant, and the calibrated galvanometer shows a reading related to the velocity. 5, record 45, English, - hot%2Dwire%20anemometer

The object in brightening mechanical pulps is to decolourize or brighten the lignin or other colouring components without dissolving them so that the yield advantage is not lost. Mechanical pulps are brightened by treatment with either an oxidizing(hydrogen peroxide) or a reducing(sodium hydrosulphite) agent or, for higher brightness, a peroxide-hydrosulphite sequence which alters the chromophoric groups in fibres so that their light absorption is diminished. 1, record 70, English, - mechanical%20pulps%20brightening

2, record 70, French, - blanchiment%20des%20p%C3%A2tes%20m%C3%A9caniques

Tom's first form of catastrophe is simply called the "fold". Consider a balloon being blown up by someone at a party. The control variable in this change is air pressure, because reducing or increasing air pressure alters the balloon's dynamics. As the air pressure in the balloon increases, the system approaches the edge of the catastrophe fold. If pushed too far it falls over the fold-into oblivion. After passing through its "fold catastrophe", the balloon burst and the system no longer exists. 2, record 75, English, - catastrophe

2, record 75, French, - catastrophe

Resistance to Temperature. ASTM Recommended Practice D 794 describes high-temperature testing for plastics. Only the procedure for heat exposure is specified, the test method being governed by the potential end use. Heat is applied using an oven with controlled air flow and with substantial fresh air intake. Two types of tests are described : continuous heat and cyclic heat. In the former, heat is gradually increased until failure occurs. Failure is defined as a change in appearance, weight, dimension, or other property that alters the material to a degree that it is no longer serviceable for the purpose in question. The test may take minutes to weeks, depending on the rate of temperature increase.
