The largest single component of tropical atmospheric intraseasonal variability(periods from 30 to 90 days). The MJO propagates eastwards at around 5 m s-1 in the form of a largescale coupling between atmospheric circulation and deep convection. As it progresses, it is associated with large regions of both enhanced and suppressed rainfall, mainly over the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. Each MJO event lasts approximately 30 to 60 days, hence the MJO is also known as the 30-to 60-day wave, or the intraseasonal oscillation.

EOEP implements Earth Explorer core and opportunity missions and also funds mission exploitation, instrument predevelopment and support for market development. Earth explorer missions such as Cryosat, the Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer(GOCE), the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity(SMOS) and the initiation of full implementation of the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission(ADM-Aeolus) are major achievements of the first phase of this programme. The second phase, EOEP-2, will give the Earth Science community and industry a stable outlook in which one new mission will be launched every year. It will also cover preparation of Earth Watch missions.

Wind in the general atmospheric circulation, typified by a seasonally persistent wind direction and by a pronounced change in direction from one season to another.

A monsoon circulation is similar to a sea/land breeze, except that it occurs over a much larger area. The most famous monsoon circulation occurs over India and southeast Asia. During the summer, the air over the continent becomes much warmer than the water surface, so the surface air moves from the water to the land. The humid air from the water converges with dry air from over the continent and produces precipitation over the region. Additional lifting from hills and mountains causes copious amounts of precipitation to occur, over 400 inches at some locations! During the winter the flow reverses and the dominant surface flow moves from the land to the water.

The term is generally confined to a situation where the primary cause is the differential heating (changing in sense from summer to winter) between a continent and the adjacent ocean.

The jet streams, especially the polar front jet streams, are very dynamic features, which exhibit long wavelength meanders known as "long waves" or "planetary waves". These are also commonly known as "Rossby waves" ... Strictly speaking, Rossby waves are a particular kind of long wave, which migrates upstream relative to the fluid flow (i.e. from east to west in the case of the sub-tropical and polar jet streams). With regard to the Pacific side of the Arctic Basin, Overland et al.(1997) report that the position of the tropospheric cold pool is approximately centered over the Canadian Arctic and the Beaufort Sea, displaced from the North Pole by orographic effects of the North American mountain ranges. The result is advection of atmospheric heat and moisture into the Greenland and Barents seas, and the eastern Arctic. The position of this arctic cold pool in turn affects the position of the arctic front and the atmospheric circulation in the western Pacific.

There are at least three distinct types of cold pool: 1. Large (in areal extent), slow-moving vortices at latitudes poleward of roughly 50deg N & S. They are often over, or immediately downwind of the source regions of polar or arctic air masses, in such areas as the Canadian Arctic or Siberian Russia. They take up the characteristics of quasi-permanent features, often appearing on monthly, or even seasonal average maps. The column of very cold (dense) air associated with this version of the cold pool, is reinforced by net outgoing radiation which produces a highly stable, bitterly cold near-surface environment, with a surface ridge or anticyclone on MSLP charts. 2. Once cold air from the source region as detailed in (1.) above is caught up in the circulation of mid-latitude depressions, the characteristics of the air mass are altered ... 3. A pool of cold air can also become "detached" at lower latitudes ...

This redistribution is accomplished by the three-dimensional motion associated with the atmospheric circulation. The trajectory of the centre is often altered by local heating or cooling of the air column, usually as a result of thermal fluxes at the surface. These fluxes change the temperature of the air near the surface resulting in density changes which modify surface pressures.
