ERS-1 and its follow-on ERS-2 are remote sensing satellites for coastal, sea and ice applications. ERS-1 was launched in 1991. It is equipped with a series of instruments including a synthetic aperture radar which continues to provide images of the best quality that are used on a daily basis by government and industry for the following applications : resource management, agriculture, geology, oceanography, ice monitoring and ship routing. ERS-1 ceased operations in 1996, and ERS-2 was launched in April of 1995. The Astro/PGBA [Astro/plant generic bioprocessing apparatus] experiment hardware is contained in a double locker that will be installed into the EXPRESS Rack after the Shuttle is in orbit. The hardware consists of a plant growth chamber with a 10-inch by 12-inch growth area that allows 10 inches of plant height and 2 inches of roots. Fluorescent or LEO lighting will simulate sunlight, and an atmospheric control system will maintain set levels of carbon dioxide and humidity while scrubbing volatile organic compounds, such as ethylene, that can accumulate and inhibit plant growth. Plant transpiration water, collected from a dehumidifier system, can be recirculated back into the root matrix. Biomass burning has only recently been recognized as a major source of important trace gases and aerosol particles. Through burning, the chemical elements in vegetation are cycled back to the atmosphere and to soils in chemical and physical forms and proportions which make biomass burning an important biogeochemical process. Before the advent of humans, fire was ignited naturally by lightning strikes in dry vegetated regions. Today, however, the process is driven almost exclusively by human activity which includes the burning of forested areas to facilitate land clearing, the burning of harvest debris to maintain cleared land, the extensive burning of natural grasslands and savannas to sustain nomadic agriculture, and the burning of biomass as fuel for cooking and heating. The importance of biomass burning is well recognized in International Global Atmospheric Chemistry and this activity, Biomass Burning Experiment : Impact on the Atmosphere and Biosphere(BIBEX), was established to address this phenomenon. Biolab is a single-rack multi-user facility that will support biological research on small plants, small invertebrates, microorganisms, animal cells, and tissue cultures. It will include an incubator equipped with centrifuges in which the preceding experimental subjects can be subjected to controlled levels of accelerations. Containers can be handled automatically by the Biolab Handling Mechanism. Independent analysis instruments are available for supporting experiment sample test analyses. A capability for the visualisation of images is at hand. The atmospheric environment of the Experiment Container may be adjusted during centrifuge operations. Automatic temperature-controlled and ambient temperature stowage units are available for storing Experiment Container samples. A Biolab glovebox provides a clean, controlled and enclosed environment for manual operations on Experiment Container samples. This instrument can measure a range of atmospheric trace constituents, with the emphasis on global ozone distributions.
