The Laboratory, formerly the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] Marine Environment Laboratory, was established in 1961 in Monaco as part of the IAEA Department of Research and Isotopes and is the only marine laboratory within the United Nations system. It responds to regular requests for technical assistance from other United Nations agencies and programmes, such as the United Nations Environment Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization and the International Maritime Organization. Nevertheless, the promotion of nuclear and isotopic techniques and the improved understanding of marine radioactivity continue to be central to the Laboratory's work. 1, record 1, English, - Marine%20Environmental%20Studies%20Laboratory

Ozone is formed in the stratosphere by the combination of O2 and atomic oxygen in the presence of a third body, usually on the surface of a particulate. The atomic oxygen results from the photolytic dissociation of oxygen. Absorption by oxygen takes place primarily in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the spectrum; the major part of the ozone absorption takes place only in the ultraviolet region. 4, record 2, English, - atomic%20oxygen

Tropospheric ozone is considered an irritant gas; it forms under the influence of sunlight especially during summer days. Several toxic precursor substances like NOx catalyse the breakdown of molecular oxygen, rendering an aggressive free radical monoatomic oxygen, which then combines with molecular oxygen to form a three-atomic and instable ozone molecule. 3, record 2, English, - atomic%20oxygen

Since a globular protein has its atoms packed close together, the atomic fluctuations are restricted. Nevertheless, the combination of many small local motions can produce large-scale, more global displacements of one part of a protein with respect to another. 3, record 3, English, - atomic%20fluctuation
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The first step toward understanding the role of atomic fluctuations in protein function is to determine the nature of the fluctuations themselves. This includes the study of their magnitude (how large they are), their probability (how often they occur) and their time scale (how long they take). The most direct approach to protein dynamics is to treat each atom in the protein as a particle responding to forces in the way prescribed by Newtonian physics, in accord with Newton’s equations of motion. 3, record 3, English, - atomic%20fluctuation

Diffraction-diffusion anomale. 1, record 5, French, - atome%2Dsonde

The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.). 2, record 7, English, - ACES%20mission
