Observations indicate that most natural dry snow slab avalanches release during storms as a result of rapid loading from snowfall... Observations also indicate that avalanche activity usually increases within a few minutes of the onset of rain-on-snow. These avalanches typically release as slabs several hours before liquid water has penetrated to the sliding layer... The mechanism of release of these immediate-type avalanches has been a puzzle; it is not clear how the snow at the shear plane at depth knows that it is raining at the surface... these avalanches release much sooner than would be expected if loading and/or lubrication caused the failure. 1, record 2, English, - immediate%2Dtype%20avalanche

Powder avalanches consist of fine particles of snow suspended in air. They often accompany dry flowing avalanches but become pure powder avalanches when the [fine particles of snow] separate from the dense core that forms the main mass of flowing avalanches. Separation may occur when the avalanche falls over a cliff, when the powder cloud overflows a channel which the core continues to follow, or in the runout zone where the powder often covers a longer distance than the denser core material. 8, record 3, English, - powder%20avalanche

5, record 3, French, - avalanche%20de%20poudreuse

[Powder snow] avalanches composed of dry snow usually generate a dust cloud as the sliding snow is whirled into the air... Their speed may exceed 200 km/hr.... Under certain circumstances, enough snow crystals are mixed with the air to form an aerosol which behaves as a sharply bounded body of dense gas rushing down the slope ahead of the sliding snow. The characteristics of debris in avalanche deposits depend on the hardness and moisture content(dry, moist, or wet) of the snow that originally released, the hardness of snow in the track, and the total distance the avalanche traveled. A hard slab usually has large chunks of debris in the deposit..., whereas a soft slab... breaks up into smaller pieces or balls. In general, the further the avalanche travels, the smaller the particles in the deposit. 3, record 9, English, - avalanche%20debris
