CONT

"Pickling" refers to cucumbers that are primarily used for processing or pickling. Pickling cucumbers have thin skins, are short and blocky, and usually have a color gradient from dark green at the stem end to light green at the blossom end. In addition, a pickling cucumber fruit has a whiter or lighter green belly(where fruit and soil are in contact) than does a slicing cucumber.

CONT

Cucumbers can be pickled for flavor and longer shelf-life. As compared to eating cucumbers, pickling cucumbers tend to be shorter, thicker, less regularly-shaped, and have bumpy skin with tiny white- or black-dotted spines. They are never waxed. Color can vary from creamy yellow to pale or dark green. Pickling cucumbers are sometimes sold fresh as “Kirby” or “Liberty” cucumbers.

CONT

Cucumbers are grown for fresh consumption (called slicers) and pickling (called picklers) ...

The European furnace insert in the MSL [Materials Science Laboratory] is developed to support research in the field of Bridgman crystal growth. The LGF [Low Gradient Furnace] consists of two heated cavities separated by an insulating, "adiabatic" zone. It is intended to provide restricted but well-controlled gradients between two stable temperature plateaux. Crystal growth is performed by translating the furnace over a stationary sample; thermomechanical stresses in the grown crystal are minimised by maintaining the solidified part of the sample in the heated cavity throughout processing. Alternatively, the insert can be used for thermodiffusion experiments by keeping the furnace stationary and using only the gradient capability. Isothermal experiments can also be carried out with suitable sample/cartridge configurations.

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility(AGHF)... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1, 400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack : the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling.

advanced gradient heating facility : In the area of microgravity sciences and materials processing, six individual experiments, some with many separate runs, were conducted in the Advanced Gradient Heating Facility, a furnace for solidifying alloys and crystals. These experiments yielded information on the physical processes involved in solidification, and the results may help drive the production of advanced semiconductor materials in space and on Earth.

Chromogranin A(CgA) is the prevalent member of the family of large acidic polypeptides which are stored in secretory granules of many endocrine cells. These proteins, termed the granins, are co-stored and co-released with specific hormones and neurotransmitters of a variety of endocrine cells. The intra-and extracellular functions of the granins are largely unknown, but cellular activities in which they may participate include :(I) prohormone functioning : the proteolytic processing of CgA to bioactive subproteins;(II) osmotic gradient regulation within the secretory organelles, and(III) protein sorting due to the initiated osmotic gradients and CgA's own ability to bind to other hormones.

OBS
