The affect heuristic is a type of mental shortcut in which people make decisions that are heavily influenced by their current emotions. Essentially, your affect(a psychological term for emotional response) plays a critical role in the choices and decisions you make.

Par ailleurs, la perception du risque est souvent altérée par la peur ou par d'autres émotions négatives. Le risque est ainsi perçu comme plus grand si l'on a peur, mais sous-estimé lorsqu'on est en colère. C'est ce qu'on appelle l'heuristique d'affectivité, c'est-à-dire un raccourci mental qui permet de prendre des décisions et de résoudre des problèmes rapidement et efficacement, en utilisant les émotions (peur, plaisir, surprise) plutôt que la raison. Des biais cognitifs peuvent alors apparaître.
