On August 15 [2019], PSPC [Public Services and Procurement Canada] announced the creation of the Industry Advisory Committee on Neural Machine Translation and the appointment of its 18 members. This Committee, whose purpose is to consult the industry on the impact of neural machine translation, is one of the first such committees in the world. Its members are professionals who represent the country's language sector. On the basis of their diverse experiences, they will make recommendations on how to use neural machine translation while preserving translation quality.

The FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] obtains advice and recommendations from rulemaking advisory committees. One of these committees is the Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee(ARAC), which is a formal standing committee comprised of representatives of aviation associations and industry, consumer groups and interested individuals. In conducting its activities, the ARAC complies with the Federal Advisory Committee Act and the direction of FAA. We task ARAC with providing us with recommended rulemaking actions dealing with specific areas and problems. If we accept an ARAC recommendation to change an FAA rule, we ordinarily publish an NPRM [notice of proposed rulemaking] using the procedures in this part.

An Advisory Committee on Assistive Devices has been formed to provide the Minister of Industry, with advice on how to support the advancement of assistive technologies in Canada. The Committee's first meeting was held in Ottawa, October 31-November 1. This committee(ACAD) meets three times each year to provide input to the Minister of Industry on issues dealing with the assistive technology industry. It also provides input on the departmental planning process to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are taken into account. For example, it was on the recommendation of the ACAD that the Information Highways Applications Branch included accessibility as a criteria in the applications process for the Community Access Program. ACAD will next be looking at issues of procurement as a development tool and making recommendations on how to ensure that people with disabilities are well served by the Connecting Canadians agenda.

Un Comité consultatif des appareils et accessoires fonctionnels a été formé afin de conseiller le ministre de l'Industrie, sur la façon de soutenir l'avancement des technologies fonctionnelles au Canada. La première réunion du Comité au eu lieu à Ottawa les 31 octobre et 1er novembre 1996. Ce comité (CCAAF) se rencontre trois fois par année pour fournir au ministre d'Industrie une opinion sur les questions touchant l'industrie des appareils et accessoires fonctionnels. Il fournit également de l'information lors du processus de planification du ministère afin de s'assurer que l'on tienne compte des besoins des personnes handicapées. Par exemple, c'est suite à la recommandation du CCAAF que le Programme d'accès communautaire (PAC) comprend des critères d'accessibilité dans le processus d'application. Le CCAAF se penchera maintenant sur la question des approvisionnements en tant qu'outils de développement et fera des recommandations pour s'assurer que les personnes handicapées sont bien desservies par le programme Brancher les Canadiens.

With the establishment of the new Science, Technology and Innovation Council(STIC), the roles and responsibilities of a number of federal advisory bodies, including the Office of the National Science Advisor(ONSA), were reviewed. In this context, the Office will be phased out, the position of National Science Advisor will be discontinued, and the STIC will function as a single external committee, providing the government with independent and integrated advice on science and technology. The Science and Innovation Sector of Industry Canada and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade will assume programmatic activities of the ONSA.
