OFFSHORE WATERS [17 records]

Record 1 2022-06-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
  • Hunting and Sport Fishing
CONT

Live bait fishing is an essential component of the pole-and-line tuna fishery, whereby small fishes are caught in rectangular lift nets, often using lights at night to lure them to the water's surface... Bait fishing takes place within the atoll lagoon around reefs prior to each offshore tuna fishing trip. The captured baitfish are kept alive in tanks in the vessels’ hold until the pole-and-line fishing begins.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Energy
CONT

Floating wind power is no longer science fiction. Promising results from five test platforms operating worldwide-including three in Japan-are turning into project plans for a first generation of floating wind farms.... Putting wind turbines on offshore platforms akin to those developed for the petroleum industry provides a means of exploiting high-quality offshore winds-which are stronger and more consistent than onshore winds-in waters too deep for today's bottom-fixed foundations.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Énergie éolienne
CONT

CONT

Moored buoys are the weather sentinels of the sea. They are deployed in the coastal and offshore waters... moored buoys measure and transmit barometric pressure; wind direction, speed, and gust; air and sea temperature; and wave energy spectra from which significant wave height, dominant wave period, and average wave period are derived. Even the direction of wave propagation is measured on many moored buoys.

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
CONT

"The Peru Current is the strongest of five areas of oceanic upwelling, "explained Dr. Julio Valdivia. "Winds blowing up from the south drive surface water offshore, to be replaced by deeper colder waters rich in nutrients. "

CONT

Phosphorites are related to the open ocean in that they evidently form on continental platforms and slopes adjacent to oceanic "upwellings," or ascending currents that bring cold, relatively phosphate-rich deep water to the surface.

OBS

upwelling: The rising of cold, heavy sub-surface water toward the surface, especially along the western coasts of continents (as along the coast of southern California); the displaced surface water is transported away from the coast by the action of winds parallel to it or by diverging currents. Upwelling may also occur in the open ocean where cyclonic circulation is relatively permanent, or where southern trade winds cross the equator.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
CONT

DEF

[A] Meteorological Observing Program.

OBS

From January to March 1986 a major field project, the Genesis of Atlantic Lows Experiment(GALE), was held off the eastern seaboard of the United States... The objective of the experiment was to improve the understanding of the genesis and development of winter storms in the region. A crucial component of the experiment was the documentation of air-sea interaction that takes place as cold and dry continental airflows over the warm surface waters of the Gulf Stream. To accomplish this, eight instrumented buoys were deployed offshore of North and South Carolina, and two research vessels were tasked with making measurements of surface and subsurface temperatures, salinities, and currents.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
  • Recherches et prospections géologiques
DEF
