The sensors and actuators, along with the diagnostic computer software in the on-board computer, make up what is called "the OBD system".

By the early 1980s, numerous vehicles were using electronics and on-board computers to control many of the engine’s control systems, such as fuel and ignition. Vehicle manufacturers had to develop ways to diagnose problems generated by the new electronic hardware found under the hood. Thus, the first OBD systems were developed by auto manufacturers in the early 1980s as electronic systems replaced mechanical systems.

[The advanced refuelling system, ] located underneath the rear fuselage of the tanker aircraft, is remotely controlled from a console in the cockpit, where an operator uses an advanced technology 2D/3D high definition/digital enhanced video monitoring system. Adverse weather, day or night refuelling can be performed, thanks to its stereoscopic vision and laser based infrared lighting systems. This gives safer operation and reduced workload for the boom operator, while enabling the tanker crew to be located together.

The Canada-United States Cargo Security Project(CUSCSP), originally known as Operation Safe Commerce-Northeast, is an international/regional initiative, comprising a public-private partnership of federal, provincial, state, and local United States and Canadian members operating in northeastern North America. Its purpose is to provide a rapidly assembled prototype test-bed for elements of cargo container supply chain security. Since early 2002, it has had as its strategic goal the production of demonstration models for the international container shipping system that maintain open borders and facilitate commerce while improving security, in-transit tracking and monitoring and data query capability designed to validate and facilitate the movement of containerized cargo.

To support the medical needs of crew members during ISS [International Space Station] assembly and operation, NASA has developed the Crew Health Care System(CHeCS). CHeCS consists of three primary elements : 1) the Health Maintenance System for providing medical care, 2) the Environment Health System for monitoring the internal environment of the ISS, and 3) the Counter-measures System, which provided hardware and procedures for crew member exercise to minimize the effects of spaceflight on the body.
