GOES-9, a three axis stabilized spacecraft, remains stationary in space which allows the [imager and sounder] instruments to be continuously pointed at the earth. The scanning system moves back and forth(i. e., east to west and then west to east) as it moves north to south. While the spacecraft is stationary, it is not absolutely still. Earth location and registration accuracy are [affected] by orbital motions, instrument motion, and thermal distortion. A complicated set of navigation(earth location) and registration(image-to-image location of a landmark) correction schemes are necessary to compensate for these effects.... The registration schemes briefly are : 1) image motion compensation(IMC) and 2) mirror motion compensation(MMC). The IMC removes spacecraft orbit and attitude motion from each image. The MMC automatically corrects for the predictable effects of the instrument mirror motions. 3, record 11, English, - mirror%20motion%20compensation

Climate changes may result from such factors as changes in solar emission, long-period changes in the Earth's orbital elements(eccentricity, obliquity of the ecliptic, precession of the equinoxes), natural internal processes of the climate system, or anthropogenic forcing(for example, increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases). 3, record 14, English, - climatic%20change

The term "climate change" is often used in a more restricted sense, to denote a significant change (for example, a change having important economic, environmental and social effects) in the mean values of a meteorological element (in particular temperature or amount of precipitation) in the course of a certain period of time, where the means are taken over periods of the order of a decade or longer. 3, record 14, English, - climatic%20change

Record number: 14, Textual support number: 2 OBS
3, record 14, French, - changement%20climatique
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 3 OBS
Record number: 35, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Elementary particles can be described in terms of a few simple properties. The most obvious of these are the mass and electric charge of the particle. ... There is a ... property which all particles carry, quantum mechanical spin. The name spin comes from an analogy with classical electro-magnetics. In classical electromagnetic theory, it is well known that a charged particle that is moving through a magnetic field will be deflected. If the particle ... is spinning about some axis the deflection will be changed; i.e. the particle will go in a different direction than if it wasn’t spinning. The effect will depend on both the rate of spin and the rotation axis. In quantum mechanics, a similar effect is observed with any quantum particle. When passed through magnetic fields, they behave as if they are spinning electric charges. What’s more, they behave as if their rates of spin are integral 0, 1, 2, ... or half-integral (1/2, 3/2, ...) of a base unit ... much like charges come in basic multiples of the electron’s charge. The concept of spin here is a bit more abstract than in the classical case. With a classical particle you can paint a little dot on the particle ... and directly measure the rotation rate by counting the number of times you see the spot in a minute. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense. 1, record 35, English, - quantum%20mechanical%20spin

The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power.... The U. S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U. S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia.... The Zarya module is 41. 2 feet long and 13. 5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes. 6, record 44, English, - Zarya%20control%20module

Matter in the known universe can be classified in terms of four states : solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma.... the transition from a gas to an ionized gas, i. e., plasma, is not a phase transition, since it occurs gradually with increasing temperature. During the process, a molecular gas dissociates first into an atomic gas which, with increasing temperature, is ionized as the collisions between atoms are able to free the outermost orbital electrons. Resulting plasma consists of a mixture of neutral particles, positive ions(atoms or molecules that have lost one or more electrons), and negative electrons. In a weakly ionized plasma the charge-neutral interactions are still important, while in strongly ionized plasma the multiple Coulomb interactions are dominant. 3, record 58, English, - plasma

Photoelectric effect, or photoelectric absorption (PEA) is a form of interaction of X-ray or gamma photon with the matter. 1, record 91, French, - injection%20pneumatique%20Orbital

The laws of physics provide only a single orbital arc, called the Geostationary Orbital Arc, over the Earth's equator, at a distance of about 22, 500 miles, where the orbital period of a satellite is the same as the Earth's rotational period. Thus, a satellite placed in this geosynchronous orbital arc over the Equator will remain fixed over a single spot on the Earth's surface, as if it was at the top of a tall tower. The fact that there is only one such orbital arc, and it is uniquely useful for communicationsatellites, creates a limited resource, i. e. orbital positions along the arc. 3, record 93, English, - orbital%20arc

4, record 97, French, - fluorescence%20X
