The Solspec spectrometer jointly developed by the Aeronomy Department of the CNRS and the Space Aeronomy Institute of Belgium, flown several times during the Atlas missions, successfully characterised the solar spectrum. A version has been prepared to be flown on the space station. These results are used in models of the atmosphere.

OBS

ESA has bartered access to three NASA-provided external mounting adaptors(~ 1 m² each) on the International Space Station(ISS) for early utilisation before the mounting sites on ESA's Columbus Orbital Facility become available in 2003. Three of the four space science instruments will be combined in the Solar Monitoring Observatory. These three complementary instruments will measure the solar spectral irradiance with unprecedented accuracy across almost the whole spectrum(17-3000 nm). This range carries 99% of the Sun's energy emission. Apart from the contributions to solar and stellar physics, knowledge of the solar energy flux(and its variations) entering the Earth's atmosphere is of great importance for atmospheric modelling, atmospheric chemistry and climatology. The three instruments are : SOVIM(solar variability and irradiance monitor) ;SOLSPEC(solar spectral irradiance measurements) ;SOL-ACES(auto-calibrating extreme ultraviolet and ultraviolet spectrometers). They will be mounted on the ESA-developed Course Pointing Device(CPD) with a pointing accuracy of the order of 1° to compensate for ISS motions.

OBS

The Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section(ELM-ES) is a JEM component which carries experiment payloads, JEM's Small Fine Arm(SFA) and Exposed Facility(EF) system ORUs [Orbital Replaceable Units]. It will supply devices to and from the EF [Exposed Facility]. This ELM-ES will be carried to orbit by the Space Shuttle where it will be operated after being connected to EF. After ELM-ES is connected to the EF, experiment payloads attached to ELM-ES will be removed and attached to the EF using a manipulator. After experiments are finished, payloads will be removed from the EF by a manipulator and returned to the ELM-ES. Later, they will be brought back to Earth by the Space Shuttle.

It has a capacity for 10 international standard payload racks (5 of which are allocated for use by other International Partners) with the facilities to be used primarily for the materials science, fluid physics and compatible life science disciplines. The COF also has external attachment points providing resources for Space Science, Earth Observation and Technology disciplines. The COF ... will be attached to the "front-end" of the ISS at Node 2. The primary structure is based on the Italian Space Agency’s Mini Payload Logistics Module (MPLM) primary structure and is 6.7 m long by 4.46 m diameter.

OBS

The steady-state operations of the COF systems and the European Payloads located within the COF will be supported by a number of organisations, teams and ground segment facilities both in Europe and the US ... Each facility is interconnected with the ESA provided IGS (Interconnect Ground Subnet). This wide area network will be implemented around a hub in Europe, with relays at the major points of data entry (MCC-H, PDSS) and nodes at each of the sites in Europe involved in COF operations.
