... the UAB [University of Alabama at Birmingham] team probed deeper into the welding process and made a fundamental metallurgical discovery-constitutional liquid film migration-a phenomenon that Dr. Thompson says would not have been found without the Gleeble. In the 1980's, researchers working in solid state electronic devices discovered diffusion-induced grain boundary migration, in which diffusion of elements from the top layer of a device would cause the grain boundaries to move in unpredictable directions. Five years later, other investigators found that running a liquid along the grain boundary could also cause it to move. Then, in the course of their NASA-related research, Dr. Thompson and his colleagues discovered that liquid film migration of grain boundaries occurred naturally during welding as the result of precipitates liquating in the heat affected zone. The UAB team further found that the migration distance was an order of magnitude greater than previously observed and that new grains were actually formed during the process. Spurred on by this discovery, the UAB researchers looked at real-world welding processes and found that constitutional liquid film migration could be found there too. 1, record 14, English, - liquid%20film%20migration%20of%20grain%20boundaries

Record number: 20, Textual support number: 1 OBS
It is possible to extract evidence and synthesize an objective and valid picture even when employing biased or potentially biased sources of information. A principal objective in the process of auditing is the search for and correction of biases. An auditor determines the presence or lack of bias in a group of accounts receivable by circularizing persons against whom claims are held. Offsetting biases are regularly taken advantage of in the construction of "internal controls". By the operation of a normally patterned system of "internal check", valid results are deemed to follow by placing individuals with independent, opposing interests in opposition to each other and making them participants in the recording of the same transaction. The assumption underlying any such device is that the offsetting biases are of the same relative order of magnitude. 2, record 20, English, - bias

The description of wind speeds is an example of the use of the Weibull distribution to describe natural phenomena. Each part of the planet has it’s own parameters for a Weibull distribution to describe the wind speed pattern in that place. On the basis of that you can calculate the number of days a year, or hours a day, with wind speeds above a certain force, or the mean wind speed, or the median wind speed, halve the days in a year have a wind speed below the median force, halve the days above. The Weibull distribution is very practical in this area because the distribution doesn’t allow for negative value’s and it is easy to appropriately consider the fact that on most days there will be a bit of wind, on some days a lot and you have those days that there is way too much wind speed. 3, record 26, English, - median%20wind%20speed

median : When a series of ’n’ observations is arranged in order of magnitude, the central value(n odd), or the mean of the two central values(n even), is termed the "median". Hydrological Data Collection. In order to model the hydrology of a stream study segment over a range of flow rates, it is necessary to collect specific data defining the hydraulic boundary conditions. Boundary conditions define the target hydraulic simulation output, i. e. the desired flow rate, velocity and water surface elevation at the up-stream and down-stream ends of the segment. Hydraulic boundary are typically defined by flow rate, velocity magnitude and direction and/or water surface elevation. Boundary conditions, for instream flow analysis, are usually defined at the up-stream or down-stream boundaries of the study segment. In addition to the boundary conditions it is important to collect both quantitative and qualitative hydraulic information within the boundaries of the study segment. This additional data is used for model calibration and verification. 1, record 30, English, - hydraulic%20boundary

A more convenient procedure [in psychophysics] is to ask the observer to match numbers to a series of stimuli. He then assigns numbers proportional to the apparent magnitude of the stimuli presented by the experimenter. This matching procedure is called magnitude estimation. In a reverse procedure, called magnitude production, the experimenter assigns a set of numbers in irregular order and the observer adjusts the stimuli to produce what he judges to be a sensation proportional to each number.(...) Magnitudes scales may also be constructed by Merkel' s method of ratio production, which he called the method of double stimulus. 3, record 41, English, - ratio%20production

Line graphs differ from each other by differences in scale rulings. The most commonly employed are the arithmetic and semilogarithmic rulings.(...) Arithmetically ruled graphs are designed to show changes in absolute amount.(...) Even when an arithmetic graph is properly constructed, it has severe limitations(...) [First], it is difficult to compare relative rates of change in the series. Second, when series that differ greatly in magnitude are compared, it frequently becomes difficult to determine the extent of the fluctuations in the series with the smaller values. Third, an arithmetic graph does not help the reader to determine whether one series of data is increasing or decreasing at a more rapid rate than other series on data that are plotted in the same field.(...) In order to overcome these limitations [one can] use semilogarithmic ruling rather than the conventional arithmetic ruling for line graphs. 1, record 42, English, - arithmetic%20graph

1, record 42, French, - graphique%20arithm%C3%A9tique

Griffith's Theory of failure is based on the assumption that the low order of tensile strength in common materials is due to the presence of small cracks or flaws. Actual stresses may occur around these flaws which are of the order of magnitude of molecular cohesion values, while the average tensile strength may be quite low. Mohr's Theory predicts that failure of materials is due to failure in shear, whereas Griffith's Theory postulates that it is due to failure at crack tips. 2, record 43, English, - Griffith%27s%20strength%20theory
