Subject field(s)
  • Welding and Soldering (Metals)
DEF

A solid-state metal joining process producing high-strength, defect-free joints in metallic materials. The process employs a pin tool with a low rotational speed and applied pressure that "mechanically stirs" two parent materials together to produce a uniform weld.

CONT

Friction stir welding uses a cylindrical, shouldered tool with a profiled pin that is rotated and slowly plunged into the joint line between two pieces of sheet or plate material, which are butted together. Frictional heat is generated between the wear resistant welding tool and the work piece. This heat causes the work piece material to soften without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to traverse the weld line. As it does, the plasticized material is transferred from the leading edge of the tool to the trailing edge of the tool shoulder and pin. It leaves a solid phase bond between the two work pieces.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Soudage (Métal)
CONT

DEF

The point at which drill-stem equipment is provided with screw threads by means of which various members can be coupled.

CONT

Tool joints have coarse, tapered threads and seating shoulders designed to sustain the weight of the drill stem, to withstand the strain of frequent coupling and uncoupling, and to provide a leakproof seal. The male section of the joint, the pin, is attached to one end of a length of drill pipe, and the female section, the box, is attached to the other end.

CONT

Based on the preoperative measurements, a Steinman pin is driven vertically into the shaft of the radius 4 cm proximal to the osteotomy site. The osteotomy is usually placed at the original site of the fracture or approximately 2 cm proximal to the joint surface. A second Steinman pin is inserted into the distal part of the radius just proximal to the articular surface to create an angle with the perpendicular pin that is equivalent to the premeasured deformity in the sagittal plane. ]
