A type of lock that uses a set of flat wafers to prevent the lock from opening unless the correct key is inserted.

A wafer tumbler however uses a system by which flat pieces of metal named “wafers” must be pushed to the correct position whereby they become flush with the plug and therefore can rotate.

OBS

This type of lock is similar to the pin tumbler lock and works on a similar principle. However, unlike the pin tumbler lock, the wafer is a single piece. The wafer tumbler lock is often incorrectly referred to as a disc tumbler lock, which uses an entirely different mechanism.

Collecting the Medeco reward probably requires that you pick one of their newer Biaxial locks, which include the forward and backward pin alignments as well as left and right. ... I believe that these are the biaxials. They are no big deal; the chisel points are offset forward or back by .025". It effectively gives each pin twice the keying versatility, since the key cut can be the right depth and twist, but if it’s not under the chisel tip, you lose. A master key for this system would have two cuts right next to each other that would address either offset [and I believe they would be at the same height, since it’s difficult to cut two different heights only .050" apart and have enough "meat" left to turn the pin].

A pin connecting two parts, designed to shear when a fixed limit load is exceeded, for use as a safety device.

CONT

A key characteristic of the secondary lock is the shear pin which holds the secondary lock lever in place during normal operation, but easily shears to allow the actuator to release the door latches. The shear pin is designed to shear at a pre-determined force, and thus allow the opening of the door latches, and in turn, the door. The design of the off-wing slide system is such that the actuator cannot be fired without shearing the secondary lock shear pin.

In front of Nelson is the Trunnion Pin Attachment Device(TPAD), basically a tube containing three spring-loaded jaws designed to lock automatically around a pin provided for this purpose on the satellite.

The script called for Nelson to float to within arm’s reach of Max’s 7-ft.-long, windmill-like solar array panels and fire the minijets on his MMU [Manned Manoeuvering Unit] to match Max’s spin of one revolution every 6 min. Using a trunnion-pin attachment device (TPAD), a hollow canister-shaped mechanism strapped like a huge belly button to the chest of his suit, Nelson would gently bump the 5,000-lb. satellite’s protruding trunnion pin (installed for just such a rescue). Three rubber-coated, spring-loaded jaws in Nelson’s TPAD were supposed to snap like a mousetrap, firmly locking Max’s trunnion into place.

The Twistlock concept is unique and represent a major advance in locking Karabiners. Use it wherever you would use a Screwgate Karabiner, i. e. on harnesses main belays, cosmic arrester, abseiling, etc. The twistlock action gives total security at all times. You cannot forget to lock the karabiner. The revolving ferrule not only locks the karabiner at the danger points, i. e.(a) where the gate opens,(b) at the hinge pin, but ensures that the ferrule cannot revolve until the gate is closed.
