PROBLEM BOX [4 records]

Record 1 1991-01-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Conditioning and Heating
OBS

Built-up air conditioning units must house the "mixing box", air filters, heating and cooling coils, and for medium-or high-pressure design, the fan or fans. Since most built-up units are for large air systems-which cannot be accommodated by factory-built units-the physical size of these built-up units make their casing construction a very substantial structural problem.

Subject field(s)
  • Medical and Surgical Equipment
OBS

Adhesive cellophane used to cover microplates during the ELISA test.

OBS

The inocula were grown outside the glove box apparatus and introduced into the apparatus just before use; this reduced contamination, as did the use of plate sealer tape. The plastic tapes also eliminated the problem of false-positive acid reactions.(abstract-Cancerlit)(Development of a micromethod for identification of anaerobic bacteria-Applied Microbiology; 1975; 30(5) ;pp. 825-830)

Record 3 1988-05-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Air Pollution
  • Atmospheric Physics
CONT

In order to predict the atmospheric concentrations of sulphur dioxide and sulphates down wind of source regions several phenomena must be quantitatively accounted for : 1. atmospheric transport and diffusion [;] 2. precipitation scavenging [;] 3. dry deposition at the earth's surface [;] 4. conversion of SO2 to sulphates. The simplest approach to solving this problem uses a "trajectory box model" with appropriate parameterization of items 2 to 4 above. This type of model has been applied in Europe and is presently being adopted to the North American scene by the Atmospheric Environment Service.

Record 4 1988-01-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Placement of Concrete
  • Tunnels, Overpasses and Bridges
CONT

The three prestressed-concrete bridges on the Caracas Autopista... presented their designer, the well-known French engineer Eugène Freyssinet, with the problem of building in concrete without ground-supported falsework.... Freyssinet's solution was ingenious.... The three box sections of each arch would be constructed in stages, starting with extremely light cantilevered formwork, placed by aerial ropeway, and strong enough to support itself and the concrete of just the thin lower chords of the arches.
