Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
  • Plant and Crop Production
DEF

[A] fungal disease that attacks the leaflets, stems, petioles, pods and seeds of lentils.

CONT

Ascochyta Blight of Lentil. Symptoms appear on leaves, stems and pods as white to tan coloured spots, often with a darker margin. The centres of lesions are often speckled with tiny, black fruiting bodies(pycnidia) which contain the spores of the fungus. When the disease becomes severe, leaves may drop prematurely and shoots may be blighted. Dieback and flower and pod abortion are the main causes of yield loss.

DEF

CONT

One significant knowledge gap necessary for assessing ecosystem-wide impacts of restoration in... estuaries is a characterization of baseline lower trophic levels. These lower tropic levels are the lowest part of the food web where organisms such as plant-like phytoplankton serve as food to animals such as zooplankton in the water column. Other organisms of lower trophic levels include plant-like microphytobenthos and marine worms living within the sediments. These organisms form an important part of the estuary ecosystem [and] provide energy at the base of the food chain [that] support the growth of larger predators at the top[, ] such as speckled trout or red fish[. These] organisms also help to break down debris, put oxygen back into sediments, and can provide a biological window into the health of an estuary.

DEF

A trout produced by crossing the lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, and the speckled trout, S. fontinalis.

CONT

Male brook trout have been artificially crossed or bred with female lake trout, producing a fertile hybrid known as a splake(from the older name for brook trout, speckled trout, and lake trout).... These hybrids have characters of both parents and are intermediate in appearance. One character used to distinguish the parents is the pyloric caeca, finger-like outgrowths of the stomach, which aid in digestion by producing enzymes. Brook trout have 23-55, lake trout 93-210 and splake 35-99.

OBS

Splake were first produced in the nineteenth century. They are also called wendigo, a name decided on by a contest sponsored by the Carling Conservation Club. The French name is "moulac" (from "truite mouchetée" and "truite de lac").
