Des algues phylloïdes du Trias ont été récemment découvertes dans un monticule corallien dans le sud du Yukon. Ces algues, en forme de plaque, sont des constructeurs primaires de quelques plages de la partie supérieur du monticule, où elles sont associées à des fossiles et à des structures sédimentaires qui témoignent d'une déposition de hauts-fonds.

Le mot «bioherme» désigne un corps lenticulaire, bioconstruit, souvent encaissé de sédiments de nature différente. Ce terme s'oppose à «biostrome» qui désigne un corps bioconstruit stratifié, non lenticulaire. Les biostromes se différencient des bioaccumulations ou lumachelles par le caractère constructeur des organismes présents et leur faible transport.

Middle and late Niagaran deposits comprising crinoid bani and complex biostromal barrier reefs constitute the Clinton and Albermarle Groups(Sanford, 1964). They formed on the shallow margins of the rapidly subsiding Michigan Basin. In Ontario these deposits form Manitoulin Island, Bruce Peninsula, and extend southeastward onto Algonquin Arch and into the subsurface beneath central and western Lake Erie.
