Nanoscale iron offers distinct advantages over conventional iron for in-situ applications in groundwater because they can be delivered to the subsurface without the need for excavation. This removes limitations due to depth, site structures and facility operations. A nanoscale colloid is small enough to flow through the pore space and associated pore throats of many granular geologic matrixes. The issues governing potential transport are not so much direct filtration, but the effects of gravity and the attractive forces at work on the mineral and colloid surfaces; this also includes agglomeration of the colloids in the injection solution.

… the breccia is more likely an intraplatformal cavern collapse feature associated with early dolomitization because : 1) the clasts are surrounded with saddle dolomite and sulfide minerals, not basinal sediments as expected if the clasts were exposed on the seafloor following margin collapse; 2) the megabreccia includes varied dolostone clasts(some fabric-preserving, some not) but lacks clasts of abutting basinal rocks and so cannot be interpreted as a post-Middle Cambrian subsurface diagenetic feature; 3) despite the size of the contained clasts, the megabreccia shows a restricted lateral distribution, not the apron-like geometry of a debris flow deposit; and 4) the megabreccia is directly overlain by non-dolomitized basinal limestone.

Late Dolomitization Associated with the Late Movement of Subsurface Waters. The genesis of dolomites that replace limestone in the deeper subsurface is currently explained by two models of fluid-flow that invoke the movement of waters with higher magnesium to calcium ratios in the subsurface. One is related to regional subsurface flow models, or burial-flow models which assume high temperatures for the subsurface fluids... and the other less fashionable model assumes the evaporation of seawater in restricted lagoons and salt flats that produce dense near surface brines that move down into porous and permeable limestones and produce coarsely crystalline "early" seepage reflux dolomites …

The production of hydrocarbon reservoirs, the exploitation of hydrothermal fields and mining activity in general are associated with microseismicity. Changes of the local stress fields and pore pressure can initiate sudden movements along existing faults or can generate new fractures which in turn result in the emission of seismic energy. • Petroleum Deposits
OBS

Oilfields, after a certain production period, are then called mature fields. Mature fields are those where the recovered oil fraction is close to the final recovery factor. Its mature phase is generally accompanied by an increasing production of water or gas, plus the aging of surface and subsurface equipment. To revitalize mature fields, a series of technologies is developed to increase the final recovery factor through treatments on a field(the so-called tertiary petroleum recovery) or well(stimulation, recompletion, treatments and logging) scale, in addition to optimizing the techniques relating to oil lift, its surface flow and treatment.

OBS

Many mature gas fields also have a fairly significant production decline, especially when development drilling has come to an end. These mature fields can be revitalized in many ways. In some instances, efforts are focused on the reservoir with further drilling to drain potentially unswept hydrocarbons with infill wells or horizontal laterals. The horizontal drilling might be from new wellbores or wells that are currently temporarily abandoned or near their economic limit. With the increase in horizontal-well activity, there is an abundance of new technology with advances in gravel-pack design, underbalanced drilling with coiled tubing, and coiled-tubing fracturing. Besides these production improvements, operators are revamping both downhole and surface facilities to help breathe new life into older fields. Advances are taking place in the areas of artificial lift, intelligent-well completions, expandable tubulars, and others.

  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
CONT

Drip Irrigation - A watering technique that reduces water use by 20 - 50%, utilizing a series of hoses and small emitters or porous tubing to deliver small amounts of water to individual plants.

CONT

Subsurface drip irrigation is a variation of traditional drip irrigation where the tubing and emitters are buried beneath the soil surface, rather than laid on the ground or suspended from wires. The products being used today in subsurface drip irrigation come in three basic configurations : hard hose, drip tape, and porous tubing.... Porous pipe products emit water all along the length of the tubing. There are literally thousands of places per meter where water weeps out of the tubing. This design has shown resistance to plugging by roots. The disadvantage is its flow path is by far the smallest of the three configurations. This increases the likelihood of plugging by fine particles. It typically has the largest coefficient of manufacturing variability of the three configurations, which can be a major detriment because it prevents high distribution uniformities and high efficiencies.
