By one route or another, man’s SO2 emissions tend to be transformed to sulfuric acid, unless they are removed by dry deposition, washout and to a lesser extent, rainout near the sources, prior to oxidation. Particulate sulfates, including H2SO4 aerosol, has a much greater atmospheric lifetime than sulfur dioxide, since it has a substantially slower rate of dry deposition.

Ten countries set up a network of measuring stations where concentrations of sulfur dioxide and particulate sulfate in air and strong acid and sulfate in precipitation were determined.

[...] le LHVP [Laboratoire d'hygiène de la ville de Paris] mesure depuis une dizaine d'années la teneur atmosphérique en sulfates particulaires sur une base de temps de 24 heures; le prélèvement est effectué sur filtre en acétate de cellulose (47 mm) à un débit de 1,5 m³ par jour. In recent years, there has been a growing concern over the potential hazard of certain constituents in particulate suspended in the atmosphere. One constituent which has received considerable attention recently is particulate nitrate. Nitrate has been found to act as a respiratory irritant, especially to those who suffer from asthma. Nitrate is also suspected as one of the agents responsible for the lowering of pH in freshwater lakes.

National Air Pollution Surveillance(NAPS) Network.... In 1999-2000, monitoring focused on the "criteria pollutants" : sulphur dioxide(SO2), carbon monoxide(CO), nitrogen dioxide(NO2), ozone(O3), and total suspended particulates. Data were also collected on other pollutants, including particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 microns(PM-10), particulate sulphate, particulate nitrate and over 100 organic compounds.

Le soufre atmosphérique est présent sous forme de composés qui interviennent en phase gazeuse, liquide ou solide. Les principaux composés gazeux sont SO2,H2S. A ceux-ci viennent s'ajouter de faibles quantités de composés minéraux ou organiques (SF6,(CH3)2S,CS2 etc.( ainsi que des produits de réactions intermédiaires.

Le soufre se rencontre surtout sous forme d'anhydride sulfureux dans l'atmosphère; il arrive donc souvent qu'une relation de synonymie s'établisse entre le soufre et ce composé du soufre.
