The mixing damper controls flow from the left inlet branch as a percentage of the mixed-air flow, subject to a preset minimum. The minimum can be scheduled or modulated by a time-switch profile in the damper component dialog. A controller then modulates flow from the left branch vs. bottom branch as a percentage of the outlet flow rate or in an attempt to achieve a target mixed-air temperature. Typical applications include outside air economizers, demand-controlled ventilation, and bypass dampers for heat-recovery, indirect evaporative cooling, heat pipes, coils with high static pressure, or similar components within an air handler. 1, record 7, English, - mixing%20damper

One characteristic of a dry-pipe system is a delay in time between the opening of a sprinkler and the discharge of water, which may allow the fire to spread and more sprinklers to open. The delay is due to the time required to exhaust the air from the sprinkler piping. The difficulty may be partly overcome by installation of quick-opening devices which either increase the rate of discharge of air from the piping or accelerate opening of the dry valve when one or more sprinklers operate, depending upon the type of device used. 4, record 9, English, - quick%2Dopening%20device

The economy exists entirely within society, because all parts of the human economy require interaction among people. However, society is much more than just the economy. Friends and families, music and art, religion and ethics are important elements of society, but are not primarily based on exchanging goods and services. Society, in turn, exists entirely within the environment. Our basic requirements--air, food and water--come from the environment, as do the energy and raw materials for housing, transportation and the products we depend on. Finally, the environment surrounds society. At an earlier point in human history, the environment largely determined the shape of society. Today the opposite is true : human activity is reshaping the environment at an ever-increasing rate. The parts of the environment unaffected by human activity are getting smaller all the time. 2, record 11, English, - human%20economy

4, record 11, French, - %C3%A9conomie%20humaine

Fluidized bed combustion systems use a heated bed of sand-like material suspended(fluidized) within a rising column of air to burn many types and classes of fuel. This technique results in a vast improvement in combustion efficiency of high moisture content fuels, and is adaptable to a variety of "waste type" fuels. The scrubbing action of the bed material on the fuel particle enhances the combustion process by stripping away the carbon dioxide and char layers that normally form around the fuel particle. This allows oxygen to reach the combustible material much more readily and increases the rate and efficiency of the combustion process. 3, record 12, English, - fluidized%20bed%20system

Continuous aeration is an alternative aeration fan design approach that has become more popular in recent years. In this type of system, aeration fans are run continuously(24 hours per day, 7 days per week [24/7]), and the rate at which air is supplied to the composting pile is controlled by dampers, by using a variable frequency drive(VFD) to speed up and slow down the aeration fan, or by a combination of these two methods. 1, record 20, English, - continuous%20aeration

The permissible limit for inhalation of a radionuclide is the appropriate ALI [annual limit of intake]. This is given in units of activity, Bq. Because it is often easier to measure and control the concentration of radioactvity in the air than to measure or control the intake, the ALIs are used to calculate the Derived Air Concentrations(DACs). The Derived Air Concentration, or DAC for any radionuclide, is that concentration in air, expressed in Bq/m³ which, if worked in for a year(50 weeks of 40 hours each for a total of 2000 hours per year), would result in the ALI for inhalation. The normal breathing rate, based on Reference Man, is 2, 400 m³ per year at work. Pyrolytic Reactions and Products of Biomass.... Presence of air increases the rate of decomposition and pyrolysis by oxidation of the substrate at the lower temperatures. At the higher temperatures oxidation of the volatile pyrolysis products results in flaming combustion and oxidation of the char leads to smoldering or incandescence combustion according to the rate of reaction. Presence of water and steam is also known to speed up the breakdown and degradation of the molecules by hydrolysis of the substrate and rearrangement of the intermediate products. This process, known as hydrothermolysis, may be catalyzed by acids or alkali reagents as discussed later. At higher temperatures the steam plays a more direct and better known role as a reactant in the gasification of char and related processes. At the higher temperatures, CO2 and H2 could also function as reactants. 1, record 38, English, - hydrothermolysis

Servo altimeters have a place among the most important instrument gauges in aviation history. The servo altimeter tells the pilot how high the plane is flying above the earth and at what rate it is climbing or descending, along with valuable information about the air pressure. The instrument differs from a normal altimeter in how it senses the altitude. A traditional altimeter uses only a barometer-style system to calculate pressure. Its instrument panel is sealed with an airtight connection to the airplane's static port, a device on the side of the plane open to a steady and reliable stream of air. 2, record 41, English, - servo%2Daltimeter

The dry and wet bulb temperatures are measured using psychrometers. Most common are those using two mercury thermometers, one of them having the bulb covered with a wick saturated with distilled water, and which measures a temperature lowered due to the evaporative cooling. When they are naturally ventilated inside a shelter, problems can arise if air flow is not sufficient to maintain an appropriate evaporation rate and associated cooling. Thermal lift is created by areas of warm air rising from the land. As the land heats up with the warmth of the sun, the air above it will begin to warm by the heat radiating from the land. This is especially true over terrain such as a freshly plowed field or a paved parking area. As the air heats, it will begin to rise and allow cooler air to move in to replace it. This air, in turn, will heat up, rise, and you will get a continuous current of rising air. As long as the air is rising at a rate greater than a glider sinks while in flight, the glider can sustain lift. 4, record 50, English, - thermal%20ascent

Reconnaissant cette nécessité, la Commission de navigation aérienne a proposé en 1997 un Plan OACI pour la sécurité de l'aviation dans le monde (GASP) au Conseil de l'OACI. 3, record 51, French, - Plan%20pour%20la%20s%C3%A9curit%C3%A9%20de%20l%27aviation%20dans%20le%20monde

Thermal flying. When the sun warms the ground, it will warm some features more than others(such as rocks or factories), and these set off thermals which rise through the air.... Once a pilot finds a thermal, he or she begins to fly in a circle, trying to center the circle on the strongest part of the thermal, where the air is rising the fastest. Most pilots use a ’vario’(vario-altimeter), which indicates climb rate with beeps and/or a visual display, to help ’core-in’ on a thermal. Good thermal flying is a skill which takes time to learn, but a good pilot can often follow a thermal up to a cloud base. 5, record 52, English, - thermal%20flying

In an indirect injection diesel engine, fuel is injected into a small prechamber which is connected to the cylinder by a narrow opening. The initial combustion takes place in this prechamber. This has the effect of slowing the rate of combustion, which tends to reduce audible noise. In a direct injection diesel engine, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The piston incorporates a depression(often toroidal) which is where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient than indirect injection engines, but have a tendency to produce greater amounts of audible noise. In either case the location where combustion takes place, called a swirl chamber, is carefully designed to ensure adequate mixing of the atomized fuel with the compression-heated air. 4, record 54, English, - direct%2Dinjection%20diesel%20engine

The test equipment consists of a horizontal tunnel 7. 6 m long, 450 mm wide, and 300 mm deep... The roof is removable and lined with a low density material of mineral composition. The walls and floor are constructed of refractory fire brick. One wall has observation windows along its length. Flames from two burners at one end are forced down the tunnel by a steady draught of air at 1. 2 m/s. These burner flames are about 1. 37 m long, release heat at a steady rate of about 90 kW, and impinge directly on the test specimen, which is mounted either on the floor or on the ceiling of the tunnel. This exposure is similar in intensity to what occurs when a small piece of furniture leaning against a wall is set on fire. The tunnel is calibrated by adjusting the rate of heat release of the burners so that it takes about five and a half minutes for flames to reach the exhaust end of the tunnel when the specimen is 18 mm select-grade red oak. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released. 3, record 55, English, - tunnel%20test

1, record 55, French, - essai%20en%20tunnel

In other words, as cloud droplets fall, air resists their downward motion and the amount of this air resistance is based on the size of the drop and its rate of fall, or velocity. The angular momentum of a tumbling orbiting satellite is changed to reduce the spinning of the spacecraft such that the spacecraft can operate in an essentially stabilized condition. The change in spin rate is accomplished by the development of a magnetic torque by commutation of magnetic air coils in response to Earth sensor signals controlled by spacecraft logic. The coils are disposed to produce magnetic dipoles transverse to the satellite spin axis such that by interacting with the Earth's magnetic field a torque is developed in a direction opposite the spin vector. The logic selects the proper magnetic dipole based upon data from sensors detecting the presence of the Earth for the development of the desired magnetic torque. 5, record 63, English, - magnetotorquer

So, if condensation is taking place, latent heat is being released to the surrounding air. So you have two opposing trends going on at the same time within this parcel of air. It's rising and cooling, but it's also condensing and being warmed. Which one will win out? That is, will the air get colder, or will it get warmer? Well, what happens is that the air will still cool off, but not as fast. If water vapor in the air is condensing, the adiabatic rate is less. The air is only cooling off at a rate of about 5 degrees C/1000 meters(3. 3 deg per 1000 feet). This is called the Saturated adiabatic lapse rate(or the wet adiabatic lapse rate, or the moist adiabatic lapse rate, depending on the textbook you are using). The saturated lapse rate varies with the original temperature of the air parcel, but 5 degrees C/1000 meters is a commonly used value. 6, record 65, English, - saturated%20adiabatic%20lapse%20rate

Constant Volume Sampler(CVS). Motor vehicle exhaust is a complex mixture of unburned fuel, combustion products(including a high water vapor content), and intake air that exits the tail pipe at high temperatures. In simulated driving conditions on the dynamometer, the volume of the exhaust emitted from the tail pipe is continually changing depending on where in the driving cycle the vehicle is(for example, during acceleration, during deceleration, at constant speed, or at idle). To quantitatively determine emission rates from vehicles, we use a constant volume sampling system, which maintains a constant total flow rate of vehicle exhaust plus dilution air. With a CVS system, as exhaust flow increases, such as during heavy acceleration, the dilution air is automatically decreased and the sampling source is representative of exhaust variations. This CVS system provides the source for all exhaust samples collected(regulated and unregulated). Because some compounds present in the exhaust are soluble in water, quantitative transfer requires that the diluted exhaust be maintained above its dew point by providing sufficient dilution air through the CVS. In addition, sampling components, such as the raw exhaust transfer duct and sample lines, must be heated to prevent water condensation. 2, record 67, English, - constant%20volume%20sampling

2, record 73, English, - constant%20volume%20sampling%20system

Smoke plumes that rise through the environment due to buoyancy or momentum become diluted with environmental air, where the rate of dilution is proportional to the rise rate of the plume. The entrainment coefficient is this constant of proportionality. This concept of lateral entrainment does not work well for convective thermals in the atmospheric boundary layer. One reason is that boundary layer thermals are part of a large overturning circulation involving the whole boundary layer during statically unstable conditions of free convection, rather than being thin currents of rising smokestack air. 2, record 76, English, - entrainment%20coefficient

Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation. 1, record 77, English, - capture%20hood

Leaf temperature and the relative humidity of the air are two of the most important influences on transpiration rate. During transpiration water diffuses from the leaf mesophyll into the air.

In the wet air oxidation or wet combustion of sludges, air pressures are raised to 1200 to 1800 psig [pounds per square inch gage-82 to 124 bars] and the accompanying temperature becomes 540°F or more. Under these conditions there is no vaporization of the sludge liquid.... External heat is applied to start oxidation of the organic matter in the sludge. Thereafter, oxidation increases until the rate reaches an equilibrium value. 3, record 99, English, - wet%20air%20oxidation

1, record 99, French, - combustion%20humide
