One characteristic of a dry-pipe system is a delay in time between the opening of a sprinkler and the discharge of water, which may allow the fire to spread and more sprinklers to open. The delay is due to the time required to exhaust the air from the sprinkler piping. The difficulty may be partly overcome by installation of quick-opening devices which either increase the rate of discharge of air from the piping or accelerate opening of the dry valve when one or more sprinklers operate, depending upon the type of device used.

Fluidized bed combustion systems use a heated bed of sand-like material suspended(fluidized) within a rising column of air to burn many types and classes of fuel. This technique results in a vast improvement in combustion efficiency of high moisture content fuels, and is adaptable to a variety of "waste type" fuels. The scrubbing action of the bed material on the fuel particle enhances the combustion process by stripping away the carbon dioxide and char layers that normally form around the fuel particle. In the exhaust duct at the end of the tunnel are a light source and detector for measuring smoke and a thermocouple for determining heat released.

So, if condensation is taking place, latent heat is being released to the surrounding air. So you have two opposing trends going on at the same time within this parcel of air. It's rising and cooling, but it's also condensing and being warmed. Which one will win out? That is, will the air get colder, or will it get warmer? Well, what happens is that the air will still cool off, but not as fast. If water vapor in the air is condensing, the adiabatic rate is less. The air is only cooling off at a rate of about 5 degrees C/1000 meters(3. 3 deg per 1000 feet). This is called the Saturated adiabatic lapse rate(or the wet adiabatic lapse rate, or the moist adiabatic lapse rate, depending on the textbook you are using). The saturated lapse rate varies with the original temperature of the air parcel, but 5 degrees C/1000 meters is a commonly used value.

The pseudoadiabatic lapse rate is so close to the moist adiabatic lapse rate that meteorologists tend to ignore this difference and often refer to them synonymously. Motor vehicle exhaust is a complex mixture of unburned fuel, combustion products(including a high water vapor content), and intake air that exits the tail pipe at high temperatures. In simulated driving conditions on the dynamometer, the volume of the exhaust emitted from the tail pipe is continually changing depending on where in the driving cycle the vehicle is(for example, during acceleration, during deceleration, at constant speed, or at idle). To quantitatively determine emission rates from vehicles, we use a constant volume sampling system, which maintains a constant total flow rate of vehicle exhaust plus dilution air. With a CVS system, as exhaust flow increases, such as during heavy acceleration, the dilution air is automatically decreased and the sampling source is representative of exhaust variations. This CVS system provides the source for all exhaust samples collected(regulated and unregulated). Because some compounds present in the exhaust are soluble in water, quantitative transfer requires that the diluted exhaust be maintained above its dew point by providing sufficient dilution air through the CVS. In addition, sampling components, such as the raw exhaust transfer duct and sample lines, must be heated to prevent water condensation.

The Pressurized Module (PM) is a facility where astronauts conduct experiments or control the total JEM [Japanese Experiment Module] facility. Inside the PM, the air composition and pressure are kept the same as on Earth, and temperature and humidity are controlled so as to be comfortable for astronauts’ activity all the time. Therefore, astronauts can work in the PM in a shirt-sleeve environment as we do on the ground.

One reason is that boundary layer thermals are part of a large overturning circulation involving the whole boundary layer during statically unstable conditions of free convection, rather than being thin currents of rising smokestack air.

Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation.
