Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process(COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council(ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well.

Ce procédé est fondé sur le principe de la combustion in-situ par injection d'air. L'allumage de l'air provoque la combustion de l'oxygène contenu dans l'air au contact de l'huile qui, elle, est oxydée. Par rapport à un procédé conventionnel de combustion où le front de combustion se propage entre deux puits distants horizontalement de plusieurs dizaines de mètres, l'idée proposée ici est de voir se créer un front de combustion qui se propage de haut en bas dans un réservoir entre un puits vertical situé en haut du réservoir dans la couche imprégnée d'huile et un puits horizontal situé en bas du réservoir. L'air étant composé d'azote et l'oxygène, quand la combustion a lieu, elle a pour effet de voir disparaître l'oxygène qui réagit avec l'huile pour donner une huile oxydée, du CO2 et de l'eau. Reste l'azote qui par gravité va rester sous forme de chapeau de gaz (ou «gas cap») dans la partie supérieure du réservoir. Pour évacuer cet azote et éviter qu'il ne fasse cesser la combustion, il est proposé de le produire par des puits verticaux situés latéralement par rapport aux deux puits déjà cités. Ce procédé a été testé au laboratoire mais n'a pas été validé sur champ. [Source : Institut français du pétrole, 2002.]

Les différentes techniques de production de brut lourd peuvent être soit du type «primaire» soit du type «amélioré». Suivant les caractéristiques de l'huile et de la roche réservoir l'une ou l'autre sera employée. La production primaire [...] est envisageable pour les huiles lourdes grâce à la technologie dite du «puits horizontal». Cette technique permet en effet d'améliorer considérablement la productivité d'un puits et d'augmenter le taux de récupération ultime. Elle est utilisée au Venezuela pour produire «à froid» (sans réchauffage de l'huile) les bruts extra-lourds de l'Orénoque de façon rentable. Elle n'est cependant pas adaptée aux formations non consolidées où la production de sable associé à l'huile est relativement importante.

The company recently worked with the Alberta Research Council to design and develop a rotary drum composter, equipment that completely isolates waste material in a container and accelerates the composting process.

A rotating barrel composter can be made from a large drum with aeration holes punched in it, and fins inside to lift and mix the compost materials. A hinged loading door in the side allows wastes to be added gradually. Some are rolled on the ground to mix the contents; others are mounted horizontally on stands with crank attachments.

There are vast, deep coalbeds in Alberta, Canada which are unmineable but contain trapped methane. The Alberta Research Council(ARC) is leading a group of provincial, national and international organizations to exploit the coalbed methane by testing a novel process of injecting carbon dioxide. This process is called Enhanced Gas Recovery(EGR). It is similar to the established practice of using CO² injection to enhance production from oil reservoirs. With EGR, the injected CO² is adsorbed in the coal, to be stored in its pore matrix, releasing the trapped methane that can be collected and sold.

Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process.

Toe To Heel Water Flooding : An Effective Short Distance Oil Displacement Process for Light Heavy Oil Reservoirs.... Wascana Energy Inc. and Alberta Research Council invite you to attend an information session to describe the Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding(TTHW) process.... Background With the advent of horizontal wells in Improved Oil Recovery of heavy oils, a change is taking place in the approach to improved recovery of oil. Currently, there is a move from displacing oil in a flood pattern from injector to producers over long distances(of the order of hundreds of meters) to short-distance oil displacement(SDOD) processes(typically over a few meters). Due to the high viscosity of heavy oil, the displacement to producers located long distance away tends to make waterflooding inappropriate. Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage, Vapor Extraction and Toe-To-Heel Displacement Processes(TTHDP) belong to the SDOD processes. TTHDP can be applied as a non-thermal recovery technology, such as Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding or as a thermal technology such as Toe-To-Heel Steamflooding and Toe-To-Heel Air Injection. More than 17 laboratory tests of Toe-To-Heel Waterflooding(TTHW) showed that this process will provide good results for lighter heavy oil reservoirs(with viscosity less than 1200 mPas). Hele Shaw model tests indicated ultimate recovery factors substantially higher for the TTHW, when compared to conventional waterflooding using vertical wells.

Le procédé qui est connu est le «toe-to-heel air injection» ou THAI. Le principe de ce procédé, d'après ses inventeurs, est le suivant : Il s'agit de forer un puits vertical dont la section dans le réservoir imprégné d'huile lourde est proche de l'extrémité («toe») d'un puits horizontal. De l'air est injecté dans le puits vertical équipé d'un système d'allumage qui provoque une combustion de l'oxygène contenu dans l'air injecté au contact de l'huile. Un front de combustion se propage alors perpendiculairement au puits horizontal, donc vers l'autre extrémité de ce puits («heel»), d'où la dénomination «toe-to-heel». D'après les inventeurs du procédé, l'huile réchauffée au niveau du front de combustion s'écoule vers le bas en direction du puits horizontal sous l'action de la gravité et est récupérée vers la surface. Une interrogation subsiste concernant la percée probable de l'air injecté dans ce puits horizontal qui aurait pour résultat de provoquer un arrêt du front de combustion.
