High aspect ratio, or fiber-shaped, nanoparticles(HARNs), represent a growth area in nanotechnology as their useful properties become more apparent. Carbon nanotubes, the best known and studied of the HARNs, are handled on an increasingly large scale, with subsequent potential for human inhalation exposure. Their resemblance to asbestos fibers precipitated fears that they might show the same type of pathology as that caused by asbestos and there is emerging evidence to support this possibility. The large number of other HARNs, including nanorods, nanowires and other nanofibers, require similar toxicological scrutiny. In this article, we describe the unusual hazard associated with fibers, with special reference to asbestos, and address the features of fibers that dictate their pathogenicity as developed in the fiber pathogenicity paradigm. This paradigm is a robust structure-toxicity model that identifies thin, long, biopersistent fibers as the effective dose for fiber-type pathogenic effects. It is likely that HARNs will in general conform to the paradigm and such an understanding of the features that make fibers pathogenic should enable us to design safer HARNs. 3, record 1, English, - high%20aspect%20ratio%20nanoparticle

(Nanowerk News) A UK consortium of scientists, led by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh, has published a key report examining whether high aspect ratio nanoparticles (HARN) should raise the same concerns as asbestos fibres. HARN includes materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and metal nanowires. The review, which was published by DEFRA [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] this week, identified many similarities between HARN and asbestos with regard to their physico-chemical properties and toxicological effects, and it concluded that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that HARN, which have the same characteristics (diameter, length and biopersitance) as pathogenic fibres such as asbestos, are likely to have similar pathology. 4, record 1, English, - high%20aspect%20ratio%20nanoparticle

Tapis vert, meaning literally a "green carpet", was first coined in the garden at Versailles in 1680 where André Le Nôtre used a mown grass strip punctuated by urns and statues to divide the main axis, the Allée Royale. This became a template for other grand schemes, including George Washington's plan for the landscaping of independent America's new capital. The term tapis vert has come to embrace a wider meaning, encompassing any area of lawn cut in a regular shape. It is also used to describe areas mown at various heights to produce patterns and it is here that the lawn could enjoy a degree of reinvention, assisted by advances in technology-most mowers can be adjusted by the flick of a lever to give various cutting heights. In areas of a modest size, rotary mowers would be ideal for this purpose. 2, record 12, English, - green%20carpet

A generic term used to describe any soft, relatively slow and delicate shot hit with very little pace or depth low over the net and usually at an acute angle, but also at the feet of an opponent if he is inside the service court area. Used especially to neutralize the effectiveness of volleying attacks. 2, record 13, English, - dink
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Although a "chip shot" is usually shallow, forcing an opponent to move quickly forward to hit up on a low ball right into the waiting hands of the attacker, the term is not entirely synonymous with "dink". The latter is more generic in that it may refer to any shallow shot hit with much or very little spin. Moreover, it usually implies a certain degree of ruse and deception with the use of body language unlike the neutrality of the term "chip". "Dinker" is the slang term often heard on the courts. 2, record 13, English, - dink

Blister [is] a term sometimes used to describe weather blisters. These are small surface blisters, which can be seen in large numbers over the entire roof area, more predominant during warm weather where roofs are exposed directly to the sun, and which are a result of natural weathering of the surface bitumen. Volatiles and water vapour in the bitumen tend to be driven off by heat, and when the gases are trapped they form small blisters. This type of blistering usually does not cause any failure during the normal life of the roof. 5, record 15, English, - blueberry

Laser annealing of ion-implantation damage was perhaps the first area of laser processing investigated. This is one reason why there is wide-spread use of the term laser annealing to describe the entire field of laser wafer processing. The laser's ability in the following areas is well documented-for instance, the annealing of : 1. Polycrystaline silicon to increase grain size, 2. Polysilicon films to decrease sheet resistivity, 3. Ion implantation to diffuse dopant, 4. Ion implantation to heal stress areas, but the laser wafer annealer has applications beyond this, including : 1. Trimming resistors and capacitors, 2. Serializing wafers, 3. IC failure analysis, 4. Mask repair. 2, record 16, English, - laser%20annealing

If the resolution of the image is sufficiently high(e. g. 1m or less), it may be that each pixel will represent only one type of land cover, and so we can make an accurate ’hard’ classification. However, for lower-resolution images-the kind that are more readily available for different places and for different times-each pixel is likely to represent a mix of different land-cover types. As a result, a hard classification will probably represent only a part of the pixel and will inaccurately describe the remainder of the area covered by that pixel. 4, record 18, English, - hard%20classification

The description of wind speeds is an example of the use of the Weibull distribution to describe natural phenomena. Each part of the planet has it's own parameters for a Weibull distribution to describe the wind speed pattern in that place. On the basis of that you can calculate the number of days a year, or hours a day, with wind speeds above a certain force, or the mean wind speed, or the median wind speed, halve the days in a year have a wind speed below the median force, halve the days above. The Weibull distribution is very practical in this area because the distribution doesn’t allow for negative value's and it is easy to appropriately consider the fact that on most days there will be a bit of wind, on some days a lot and you have those days that there is way too much wind speed. 3, record 26, English, - median%20wind%20speed

Irrigation is a term used to describe the process of watering farmland by diverting water from natural sources to designated areas. The diversion of water is developed and controlled within what is called an irrigation district. An irrigation district is responsible for maintaining a water supply to farmers in a certain area. This is accomplished by using a water source such as a river and diverting it through a system of dams, reservoirs, and canals that eventually deliver water right to the farmers’ fields. 2, record 28, English, - irrigation%20season

There are several technical methods which are related to CVM [contingent valuation methods] but which are increasingly viewed as distinct from CVM, called discrete choice methods. They are different from CVM in that "instead of eliciting willingness to pay for the environmental good or service in a specified "state", the [methods] offer respondents a series of choice tasks among hypothesized alternatives which describe a wider range of "states" by altering various levels of several attributes, among which price is merely one attribute". These are new methods and are not as well known or accepted as CVM approaches. Two of the emerging methods are titled-discrete choice modeling and discrete choice experiments(DCE). Discrete choice modeling is a technique used to derive a demand curve for an area based on different combinations of "discrete choices". A large sample is usually required to undertake this analysis where respondents are asked to select one choice("bundle of goods and services" related to the protected area with a price associated with it) over another choice. The results of this analysis produces a demand curve which can be used to estimate the value of benefits. 1, record 33, English, - discrete%20choice%20modeling
