DEF

Loop of webbing (flat strips of woven nylon).

CONT

When you loop and tie webbing it becomes a runner. To make a runner you must loop the with a Ring Bend Knot (also called the Water Knot).

CONT

Runners. Sewn runners, always made of webbing, are stronger, lighter, and less bulky than the knotted runners.

CONT

Runners... are necessary for slinging chocks, setting anchors, as rappel loops and as quickdraws [or making] harnesses, Prusik loops, daisy chains, cow's tails, and etriers.

OBS

Climbers usually refer to the cord that they rig their chocks with as slings; when they say runners, they usually mean the webbing loops that they use to connect their rope to their protection.

CONT

Etriers can also be made out of stiff webbing without platforms... This is a variation of the earliest method of all, with webbing replacing the line... webbing étriers get hung up less than those with platforms, and make no noise. On the other hand, the feet do not as a rule slip into webbing étriers as easily as those with platforms.

CONT

A soft étrier is made entirely of webbing. It has 4-6 steps that are formed by loops in the webbing.

OBS

According to the director of the Carleton Village School, and the director of Equinox Adventures, webbing étriers are usually used in pairs.

DEF

The stiffer, non-tubular webbing is best as the steps in the etriers will hold their shape. But for most uses, the soft tubular variety is better as it is easier to work with and holds knots better.

CONT

The most common use for webbing is for runners.
