HORIZONTAL SETTLING [7 records]

Record 1 2015-12-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
CONT

A grit chamber can be defined as a modified settling basin in which the horizontal velocity of flow is so controlled that only heavier solids such as grit and sand are removed while the lighter organic solids are carried forward in suspension.

OBS

velocity: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Tectonics
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

A local mass movement that involves principally the gradual downward settling or sinking of the solid Earth's surface with little or no horizontal motion and that does not occur along a free surface(not the result of a landslide or failure of a slope).

PHR

Subsidence of basins.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tectonique
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
DEF

Record 3 2004-09-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
  • Wastewater Treatment
DEF

For a particle falling in a nonturbulent fluid (liquid or gas), the maximum possible velocity reached when the drag, or frictional resistance, on the particle equals the gravitational force on the particle.

CONT

terminal settling velocity.... The measure is used in the design of chambers in which particles are removed from air or from water by gravitational settling. The horizontal flow rate through the chamber must allow time for the particles to reach the bottom of the Settling Chamber.

OBS

settling chamber [(or settling tank)] (Water Quality) An enclosed container into which wastewater contaminated with solid materials is placed and allowed to stand. The solid pollutants suspended in the water sink to the bottom of the container for removal.

OBS

settlement rates: The rate of downward movement of particles through water. ... The settling velocity of a particle is often the same as the Terminal Settling Velocity.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
CONT

Determining if a Water Treatment Plant is Exceeding Its Capacity... although filter performance declines as the filter rate increases, the decline is gradual. A filter operating at 5. 5 gpm/sf(gallons/minutes/square foot) performs nearly as well as the same filter operating at 5 gpm/sf. Likewise, a horizontal settling basin operating at 1. 1 gpm/sf performs nearly as well as the same basin operating at 1. 0 gpm/sf. Although turbidity removal does not directly predict the removal of microorganisms, it is the only standard method the industry has today for monitoring the removal of particulates.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des eaux
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
CONT

The intercepting sedimentation tank is based on contact flocculation and intercepting precipitation with special structure. The treatment efficiency of low-temperature and low-turbidity water by intercepting sedimentation tank was studied and compared with that of horizontal-flow settling tank and the inclined plate settler. The results showed that the treatment efficiency of intercepting sedimentation tank with excellent capacity of intercepting flocculation and adaptability to water quality variation was obviously higher than that of horizontal-flow settling tank and approximated to that of inclined plate settler. This kind of sedimentation tank is of great potential for development and application.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traitement des eaux
DEF

Thickeners may be either static or mechanized. Static thickeners. These are generally simple, cylindrical tanks tapering at the bottom and designed in the manner of static settling tanks... The slope of the floor must be adequate(50 to 70 ° to the horizontal). This type of thickener, which is rarely buried, can be up to about 5 m(16 ft) in diameter.
