The heat collector is a flat plate of blackened metal(steel, aluminum, or copper), to which tubes are attached in any manner which provides good thermal contact. The collector is glazed with a glass or plastic cover to trap the Sun's heat and to reduce heat loss to the atmosphere.

Advantages and disadvantages of certain materials. Whipcord is made for laborers, postmen, milkmen, and such and will not get wet with the first raindrops. Corduroy, on the other hand, soaks up moisture too easily and is not very durable. Wool will remain warm even when drenched and is the best answer for outdoor wear. You may consider lederhosen, leather pants imported from the Alps. The knicker length variety, though expensive, are a good investment because rocks will not tear them. Non-waterproof nylon wind pants are useful to wear over other trousers in windy, frigid areas and when climbing extensively above timberline. Wind pants should be loose-fitting and have a drawstring around the ankles to prevent wind from blowing up the legs. Rain pants in waterproof fabric are of some value in wet, brushy areas, but in general the lack of ventilation makes these pants unsatisfactory. A light pair of cotton pants may be used as extras for hot weather, but are no substitute for wool pants in cold weather.

Because the O2 sensor must be pre-heated to function, many newer units contain a little 12 volt heater that brings it up to temperature sooner, offering better fuel economy and driveability earlier. These sensors can be identified by the number of wires coming out of the unit. Just one wire means you don’t have a heater. Those that have three wires use one for the signal, and two for the heater circuit. Those that have four wires use one for the signal, one for the signal’s ground, and two for the heater. In this case usually the signal wire is shielded against interference, much like common television coaxial cable.

Return Flow Mechanical Atomizing Oil Burners. This [commercial-industrial oil] burner is a modification of a mechanical atomizing burner; atomization is accomplished by oil pressure alone.... The burner was developed for use in large installations such as on shipboard and in electric generating stations.... It is also used for firing large hot water boilers compressed air is too expensive for atomizing oil in large burners.... Wide range is accomplished by use of a return-flow nozzle which has a swirl chamber just ahead of the orifice or sprayer plate. Good atomization is attained by maintaining a high rate of oil flow and high pressure drop through the swirl chamber. The excess oil above the load demand is returned from the swirl chamber to the oil storage tank or to the oil pump suction. Control of burning rate is accomplished by varying the oil pressure in both the oil inlet and the oil return lines.
